What Are No Frill Hotels?
No frill hotels offer three luxuries to the visitor; a bed, a shower and the security of the room. The traditional hotel or motel offers plenty of extras that will never be found in a no frills hotel including phone service, ice buckets, free towels and coffee machines. The consumer sees the no frills hotels as being an economical choice for travel and vacations and when money is on the line, many people are willing to give up those four cups of Joe.
The no frills hotel is more than a change – it is a movement toward necessity verses luxury. The average cost in US$ is $3.00 to $30.00 per night, depending on the location of the no frills hotel. The no frills rooms are generally smaller than the average hotel room, but the five star bed and the amazing shower leave guests with the same necessities of the frill based hotel room without the same cost. Not all no frills hotels will offer the same accommodations with the more mainstream hotels offering WiFi access, restaurants and laundry service either on the premises or within a short distance of the hotel.
The no frills hotel is popping up in many major destinations across the world including Singapore, Delhi, Beijing, London and Kuala Lumpur.
Singapore – Hotel81 is located at 21 Lorong 12 Geylang, Singapore. The average price for a room is $24 US.
Delhi – The Maharani Lodge is located at 32 Arakashan Road, Ramhagan Puhardhant. Single rooms start at $13 US.
Beijing – Home Inn Hotel Beijing Bei Xin Qiao located at Number 7, Xiguan Lane, North Street, Dongcheng Dist. The prices vary and will be revealed upon booking a room.
London – The easyHotel can be found on Brick Field Lane in Harlington. Single rooms start at $40 US.
Kuala Lumpur – The Tune Hotel is located at No. 316 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The rooms start at $3 US. There are several Tune Hotels located in Malaysia.
No frills hotels can be found all over the United States, Malaysia, Japan, Europe and other major international destinations. These no frills hotels are not reserved for the business traveler and more and more travelers on vacation or holiday are finding more reasons to book no frills hotels and spend their time truly vacationing as opposed to sitting in a room for a week or two.

Tune Hotels now span Malaysia and are soon to expand into Bali. My personal experience in the Tune Kota Kinabalu was exceptional, in fact, much better than many 2-3 star hotels due to the modern facilities and awesome hot-water shower! I can highly recommend the Tune Hotels – http://www.tunehotels.com/

I am currently staying at the Tune Hotel Waterfront in Kuching, Sarawak. It is one of my worst experience with hotels and I want my money back. The concept and the design seems great but the hotel is filthy. There were dried blood or fecal matter on the toilet seat and tank. The toilet itself seems like it had never been brushed and it smells like a public toilet. The shower and bathroom floors are filthy with debris of past occupants. There were toothpaste remnants and blue colored splashes in the sink. The pulldown desk has spillage and you cannot walk around barefoot in the room because the floor is dirty. I paid for air-conditioning that doesn’t cool the room. To use the paid wi-fi, you’d have to go downstairs or sit on the bench by the elevator because it is very dodgy in the room.
The no frill hotel concept is great but cleanliness should be a necessity not an option. If cleanliness is an option, I would have gladly paid extra. I paid RM109 for a hot room with an attached public bathroom. It’s sad but I would not recommend Tune Hotel to anyone. You’d be better off at a clean cheap backpacker hostel.
