Hub, network and route map
Riga is the centre of everything airBaltic does. The airline runs a transfer-bank model there, clustering arrivals and departures into waves so a passenger from, say, Tampere can land, wait an hour and continue to Amsterdam on the next outbound push.
That is how a carrier based in a country of under two million people sustains a network across Europe and into the Middle East. In July 2026 it operated 4,786 flights.
Beyond Riga, airBaltic bases aircraft at Tallinn and Vilnius, giving Estonian and Lithuanian travellers nonstop routes without backtracking through Latvia. Flights to Tallinn are among the shortest in the network at under an hour.
A seasonal focus city in Gran Canaria, opened in 2023, puts aircraft in the Canary Islands over the northern winter, when Baltic demand for sun routes peaks and home-market flying slows.
The August 2026 plan pulls this network in, towards a tighter map centred on Riga with greater frequency in markets airBaltic already serves. Wet-leasing capacity to other carriers should keep the remaining aircraft busy year-round.
One confirmed early example: airBaltic has already dropped one of its three weekly Riga-Ljubljana rotations for winter 2026/27, pausing from 20 October to 27 March 2027. That is a single route, not evidence the whole thin-route tier is being cut.
For travellers, thin or experimental routes carry the most risk while core trunk routes hold up. Riga remains an easy city break, and hotels in Riga are among the better value in the European Union.
Fleet and aircraft
- One aircraft type, no exceptions. airBaltic flies the Airbus A220-300 and nothing else. A single-type fleet cuts training, spares and maintenance complexity, a real cost advantage for a small airline. The trade-off is concentration risk: any problem affecting the A220 hits the whole operation at once.
- The fleet is shrinking sharply. Under the 11 August 2026 business plan, the fleet goes from 54 aircraft to around 36 by the end of 2026, then rebuilds slowly to roughly 40 by 2031. The previous strategy pointed towards a fleet approaching 100 jets, and that has been abandoned.
- Pratt & Whitney engines are part of the story. The A220 uses the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine family exclusively, and a long-running inspection and repair programme has kept aircraft grounded across A220 and A320neo operators worldwide. airBaltic named constraints on Pratt & Whitney engine deliveries among the reasons for revising its plan, alongside moderating revenue growth and high costs from the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. It has not published a current count of its own grounded aircraft, so treat figures quoted elsewhere with caution.
- Ownership sits mostly with the state, for now. The Latvian government holds the large majority of shares today, with Lufthansa Group holding a 10% stake acquired through a EUR 14 million convertible investment. Under the pending August 2026 recapitalisation, the government has said it intends to keep at least 25% plus one share rather than today’s large majority, once new equity and any bondholder debt-to-equity conversion take effect, subject to the 17 August 2026 bondholder vote. That relationship with Lufthansa is also why airBaltic aircraft turn up flying for Lufthansa Group carriers under wet-lease.
Baggage allowance and check-in
airBaltic runs a hybrid fare-family model, so the ticket name decides what you get. In economy the ladder is MINI, BASIC, CLASSIC and FLEX.
Only CLASSIC and FLEX include a checked bag: CLASSIC gives one bag up to 23 kg, FLEX gives two with a combined 46 kg limit and 32 kg per bag. Economy MINI and BASIC include none, so you buy it separately on the website, in Manage My Booking or by phone.
Business Class and Business EXPERIENCE match FLEX’s two-bag, 46 kg combined allowance. Maximum bag dimensions are 100 x 50 x 80 cm.
Cabin baggage follows the same logic. Economy MINI is the strict one: a single personal item of 40 x 30 x 15 cm that must fit under the seat in front, within an 8 kg total.
Economy BASIC, CLASSIC and FLEX each add a cabin bag of 55 x 40 x 23 cm inside that same 8 kg. Business fares allow two cabin bags plus a personal item up to 24 kg.
Club VIP members get the Business allowance in any cabin. Executive members get 12 kg on economy fares.
Online check-in opens five days before departure for Economy FLEX and Business fares, 48 hours before for Economy MINI, BASIC and CLASSIC, or 24 hours before on itineraries mixed with partner airlines.
Deadlines are tight and apply online as well as at the desk: at most stations the cut-off is 40 minutes before departure in economy and 30 minutes in business. Give yourself margin at Riga during the morning transfer bank, when the terminal fills quickly.
Loyalty programme
airBaltic Club is the airline’s loyalty programme and its currency is Points. Members earn Points on airBaltic flights and on partner and everyday spending, then spend them on award flights, upgrades, gift cards and baggage vouchers.
Because the same currency covers ancillaries as well as fares, it behaves like a travel wallet, which suits the short-haul flying most members do.
Status tiers run up to Executive and VIP, and they carry tangible benefits. VIP members get the Business Class cabin baggage allowance of two cabin bags plus a personal item up to 24 kg whatever cabin they fly.
Executive members get 12 kg on economy fares. Baltic residents can earn faster through the Citadele-issued C airBaltic card.
How to contact airBaltic or manage a booking
Most changes are self-service. Manage My Booking on airbaltic.com handles seat selection, extra baggage, meals, name corrections and, where your fare allows, date changes.
The airBaltic app covers check-in, boarding passes and flight status, and it is the fastest route to a rebooking during disruption. Tickets issued by a travel agent or another airline have to be changed through whoever issued them.
airBaltic is licensed in Latvia, an EU member state, which makes it what EU Regulation 261/2004 calls a Community carrier. The regulation covers any flight departing an airport in the EU or EEA regardless of which airline operates it, and separately covers airBaltic-operated flights that depart a non-EU airport and land in the EU, because airBaltic itself is an EU carrier.
It does not cover a flight that both starts and ends outside the EU, even one airBaltic operates. Where it does apply, it gives you a right to care during long delays, rerouting or a refund on cancellation, plus fixed cash compensation for cancellations and long delays inside the airline’s control.
Extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather or air traffic control restrictions can remove the compensation entitlement while leaving the duty of care intact. Claims go to airBaltic first, and the European Commission publishes a plain-language guide to air passenger rights if you need to escalate.
Frequently asked questions
Is airBaltic a low-cost or a full-service airline?
It sits between the two, on what the industry calls a hybrid model. Fares unbundle like a low-cost carrier, with Economy MINI and BASIC excluding checked baggage, yet airBaltic sells a genuine Business Class and operates a connecting hub with through-checked bags. Book the cheapest fare and it feels like a budget airline. Book CLASSIC or above and it feels like a legacy one.
Is airBaltic still flying normally after the August 2026 restructuring?
Yes. It is still operating and carried a record 3,012,700 passengers in the first seven months of 2026. The 11 August 2026 plan would cut the fleet to roughly 36 aircraft by year end and refocus the network on Riga, but it still needs bondholders to approve financing at a vote rescheduled for 17 August 2026. Some routes and frequencies are likely to be trimmed for winter either way, so watch your booking email for schedule changes.
Does my airBaltic ticket include a checked bag?
Only on Economy CLASSIC, Economy FLEX, Business Class or Business EXPERIENCE. Economy MINI and BASIC include none. CLASSIC gives one bag up to 23 kg; FLEX and the Business fares give two, with a 46 kg combined limit. Adding a bag in Manage My Booking is normally cheaper than paying at the airport.
Can I claim EU261 compensation on an airBaltic flight?
Usually, but it depends on the route. EU261 covers any flight departing an EU or EEA airport on any airline, plus airBaltic flights that depart outside the EU and land inside it, because airBaltic is an EU carrier; it does not cover a flight that departs and arrives entirely outside the EU. Fixed cash compensation applies to a short-notice cancellation or an arrival delay of three hours or more, provided the cause was within the airline’s control. Weather, some third-party strikes and air traffic control restrictions can remove the cash entitlement, though the duty of care still stands.

The Airbus A220-300 exclusively, making airBaltic one of very few airlines worldwide with a genuinely single-type fleet. The A220 is a modern narrowbody with a two-by-three cabin, one seat per row fewer on the left than a typical A320 or 737. The fleet stood at 54 before the August 2026 plan and is heading to around 36, pending the 17 August 2026 bondholder vote.
