Why Air Suvidha is back: the Ebola PHEIC
Air Suvidha has returned because the WHO declared the current Ebola outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a strain of Ebola. The WHO has confirmed cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Uganda, with countries bordering the two — including South Sudan — assessed as high-risk.
Past Bundibugyo outbreaks have had case fatality rates of 30% to 50%, and there is no licensed vaccine for this strain. That is why India has reintroduced screening at its international points of entry.
The portal was first built during the COVID-19 pandemic.
