AirAsia Financial Crisis 2026: What’s Happening and Will Your Flight Be Affected?

Last updated: Sep 18, 2026

What to do about your AirAsia booking

Checked against airline and government statements, last updated 18 September 2026. Route comparisons link to live Wego search.
When are you flying AirAsia?

AirAsia says its operations remain stable. Check your booking on AirAsia’s own flight status page before you leave for the airport, since that is where a change would show first.
Nothing has changed for existing bookings. See below for what the government is actually checking, and which routes already have a backup carrier.
AirAsia still operates around 60% of Malaysia’s domestic flights, and nothing stops you booking it today. Check the table below for a backup carrier, or see AirAsia’s own page on Wego.

The worry is financial, not operational. AirAsia owes its airport operator over RM500 million and is short on cash, but no flights have been grounded and none are announced.

Malaysia’s government is checking whether Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air could absorb AirAsia’s domestic routes. They’d only do that if they also took over its aircraft leases, with no takeover agreed yet. These talks cover domestic routes only; international flights, including to Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta, aren’t part of them.

Questions

Is AirAsia going bankrupt?

No bankruptcy filing has happened. AirAsia is raising up to US$1 billion in debt to refinance older loans, and Malaysia’s government is only running contingency scenarios in case its finances worsen.

Why did AirAsia and Capital A shares crash?

AirAsia and Capital A shares fell 21% and 18% on 17 September 2026, after reports that the government was asking rival airlines whether they could absorb AirAsia’s routes.

What caused AirAsia’s financial trouble?

A RM830.5 million quarterly loss, driven by jet fuel averaging US$183 a barrel and RM331 million in foreign-exchange losses, against RM18.4 billion in current liabilities and only RM954 million in cash.

Will my AirAsia flight be cancelled?

AirAsia says operations remain stable and no shutdown has been announced. Check your own flight’s status closer to departure, since that can change faster than the news does.

What exactly is Malaysia’s government checking?

The Finance Ministry hired Alton Aviation Consultancy to assess AirAsia’s funding needs, and separately asked Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air whether they could absorb AirAsia’s domestic routes. Both said they would only take on that scale of operation if they also took over AirAsia’s aircraft leases, not just its passengers. No takeover has been agreed. This is scenario planning for a worse outcome, not a step already taken.

Will my international AirAsia flight be affected?

The government’s talks are about domestic Malaysian routes only. AirAsia’s international network, including flights to Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta, has not been part of any route-absorption discussion so far.

Are Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia and Philippines AirAsia affected too?

Those are separately run affiliates, majority owned by local partners, not the Malaysian entity now refinancing its debt. Their operations are not part of this story.
