American Airlines fares right now
These are cheapest return economy fares from real searches on Wego, for departures from American’s largest hub, Dallas/Fort Worth, flying out on 23 September 2026 and returning 30 September. Sampled 12 August 2026, in US dollars.
DFW is one sampling origin, chosen because it is American’s biggest base. It is not the airline’s only departure point, and fares from New York, Chicago, Miami and other hubs will differ.

*Marked as a mixed-operator itinerary: one leg is a codeshare flown by transatlantic joint-business partner Aer Lingus rather than American’s own aircraft. It is the cheapest fare with at least one AA-operated segment. A cheaper all-partner fare may exist, but it carries no American-operated flying.
One route came back with no usable fare at all: Doha. Every American Airlines fare our search surfaced was a Qatar Airways-operated flight carrying an AA codeshare number via Philadelphia, sold under American’s partnership with Qatar Airways.
American does not fly its own aircraft to Doha, so we left it out of the table rather than present a Qatar Airways fare as American’s own. If Doha is the destination, search Qatar Airways directly on Wego.

Baggage allowance, fees and what your fare includes
American last revised checked bag fees on 9 April 2026, with a further Basic Economy surcharge from 18 May 2026. The rates below cover domestic and near-international travel, meaning the US, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Canada and short-haul international routes.
American’s own newsroom does not publish an overweight-bag schedule alongside this update, so we have left that figure out rather than repeat an unconfirmed number. Check aa.com for current overweight and oversize charges before you fly.
Carry-on allowance is unchanged and applies to every fare type, Basic Economy included: one carry-on bag up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, plus one personal item up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches, both free.
AAdvantage elite members, most AAdvantage co-branded cardholders, active-duty US military personnel and Premium Economy and above passengers get free checked bags regardless of fare type. For what happens when things go wrong, Wego has a separate deep dive on American Airlines delay compensation.
Cabins and onboard product
American sells five broad fare families: Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Premium Economy, Flagship Business and Flagship First, the last two only on selected long-haul widebody routes.
Premium Economy adds wider seats, leg and calf rests and extra recline, but does not lie flat. Flagship Business and Flagship First have lie-flat seats, and on newer Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A321XLRs, Flagship Suites add a sliding door and direct aisle access.
From 25 August 2026, complimentary elite upgrades on the nine Premium Economy routes move one step at a time. Main Cabin upgrades to Premium Economy, and Premium Economy upgrades separately to Business, each subject to space. Paid instant upgrades and systemwide upgrades are not affected.
Fleet
American’s mainline fleet numbered in the high hundreds through 2026, built mainly around the Boeing 737 MAX 8, the Airbus A321neo family and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for long-haul.
In June 2026, chief executive Robert Isom confirmed an active request for proposals with both Boeing and Airbus for the airline’s next widebody order, aimed at eventually replacing the ageing Boeing 777-200ER fleet as those aircraft approach retirement in the 2030s.
Regional flying under the American Eagle brand is operated by separately contracted carriers, chiefly Envoy Air, PSA Airlines and Piedmont Airlines. Their fleets and schedules sit apart from mainline American Airlines figures.
Hubs, alliance and network
Dallas/Fort Worth is American’s largest hub by a wide margin, and the airline also runs major operations at Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, Miami, Philadelphia and Phoenix.
American is a founding member of oneworld and runs a transatlantic joint business with British Airways, Iberia, Finnair and Aer Lingus, coordinating schedules and fares across the North Atlantic. It also holds a commercial partnership with Qatar Airways, useful for anyone connecting through Doha, since American operates no flights of its own there.
AAdvantage loyalty programme
AAdvantage runs on Loyalty Points rather than a simple count of miles flown, with four public elite tiers: Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum. Each requires a progressively higher points total earned within the programme year.
American has adjusted these thresholds before, so check aa.com/aadvantage for the current requirements rather than treating any single figure as fixed. Elite members get bonus mile earning, free checked bags and upgrade priority, and Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members also receive systemwide upgrades that can confirm Business Class on qualifying long-haul international flights.
Check-in, boarding and seat selection
Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure. American boards in numbered groups, generally running from AAdvantage Concierge Key and Executive Platinum members first through to Basic Economy last. Elite status overrides fare class, so a Gold-tier member on a Basic Economy ticket still boards ahead of most other economy passengers.
Seat selection at booking is free but not guaranteed to be available. Skip it and a seat is assigned automatically at check-in, which can split travelling companions. Extra-legroom Main Cabin Extra seats are bookable for a fee that varies by route and demand.
Contacting American Airlines, changing or cancelling a booking
American’s US customer service line, 1-800-433-7300, runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Any ticket can be cancelled free of charge within 24 hours of booking, provided departure is at least two days away.
After that window, refundable fares get cash back and non-refundable fares typically convert to a travel credit. Cancellation and refund requests can be filed at aa.com/refunds. For irregular operations, such as the O’Hare disruption above, American typically posts a same-day waiver on its travel alerts page covering fee-free rebooking for a specific set of dates and airports.
Frequently asked questions
Is American Airlines the largest airline in the world?
It depends entirely on the metric. American has described itself as the world’s largest airline by fleet size and by revenue passenger miles in various years, but by passengers carried or scheduled capacity the ranking shifts between American, Delta and Southwest depending on the year and on whether regional American Eagle flying is counted. Treat any single largest-airline claim as metric-specific rather than a fixed fact.
How many bags can I check for free on American Airlines?
On a standard Main Cabin or Basic Economy fare, none. Checked bags are paid unless you hold AAdvantage elite status, fly Premium Economy or above, or carry an eligible AAdvantage co-branded credit card, in which case at least one bag is usually free. Carry-on and personal item allowances are free on every fare.
Am I still upgraded to Business Class as an AAdvantage elite?
Not directly from Main Cabin on the nine routes that have a Premium Economy cabin, from 25 August 2026. On those routes a Main Cabin elite upgrades to Premium Economy, and a separate upgrade from Premium Economy to Business can clear if space allows. Everywhere else the existing upgrade rules stand, and paid instant upgrades and systemwide upgrades are unchanged.
Does American Airlines fly nonstop to Doha?
No. American markets flights to Doha under its own code, but partner Qatar Airways operates them via Philadelphia. Doha is not a route where you can expect an American-operated aircraft.
What is American Eagle, and is it the same as American Airlines?
American Eagle is the regional brand for American’s short-haul network, flown under contract by separate companies, mainly Envoy Air, PSA Airlines and Piedmont Airlines, using smaller aircraft. Fleet and operational figures for the Eagle carriers are reported separately from American’s mainline numbers.
What happens if my American Airlines flight is delayed or cancelled?
