Check whether the passport deadline affects you
What do you have right now?
You cannot renew an MRP inside Bangladesh anymore. Every domestic passport office issues e-Passports only, and that was true before this deadline. Apply for an e-Passport whenever you are ready to renew.
You already hold an e-Passport, so this deadline does not affect you. Renew as normal only once your own passport nears its expiry.
You will be issued an e-Passport directly. MRPs are not available to new applicants inside Bangladesh, so there is nothing extra to plan around because of this news.
Your MRP stays valid for travel until its own expiry date. New MRP issuance is what is ending, not passports already issued. Every mission stops issuing MRPs for good on 31 December 2026.

Apply for an e-Passport at your mission if it already offers one. If your national ID or birth certificate does not match your old paperwork, get it corrected before 31 December 2026, when that window closes.
Bangladesh has set 31 December 2026 as the date every office and mission stops issuing new Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) for good. Missions that can already issue e-Passports were told to stop MRPs immediately in September 2026. In late August, offices issued 107,001 e-Passports against one MRP.
Once your passport is sorted, compare flights out of Bangladesh.

Questions
What actually ends on 31 December 2026?
New issuance of Machine Readable Passports. After that date, every passport office and every mission abroad issues e-Passports only.
Does my current MRP stop working on that date?
No. An MRP you already hold stays valid for travel until its own printed expiry date. Only the ability to get a new one is ending.
I work abroad and my national ID does not match my old passport. What should I do?
Bangladesh is letting applicants abroad use their national ID or birth certificate to fix mismatches, but only until 31 December 2026. Sort this out at your mission before that date.
Can I still apply for an MRP right now?
Only at a small number of missions abroad that have not yet switched to e-Passports, and only until 31 December 2026. Every domestic office in Bangladesh already issues e-Passports only.
How do I apply for a Bangladeshi e-Passport?
Apply online through the Department of Immigration and Passports e-Passport portal, then attend a biometric appointment. Wego’s full renewal guide walks through each step, the fees and the documents you need.

How this checker was put together
- The two controls cover the situations Bangladesh’s own notices describe: applying inside the country versus at a mission abroad, and MRP versus e-Passport versus a fresh application.
- The 31 December 2026 date and the adoption figures come from Bangla-language reporting on the Home Ministry’s own announcement, cross-checked against a second outlet before use.
- Individual missions abroad may upgrade to e-Passports before the deadline. Check with your specific mission for its current status.
