Belgium Visa From the UAE: Types, Documents, Fees, and How to Apply in 2026

Last updated: May 29, 2026

UAE residents who hold passports from visa-required countries need a Schengen visa to visit Belgium; Emirati passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

Here’s the full guide to visa types, documents, the VFS Global application process, and current fees.

Do You Need a Visa for Belgium From the UAE in 2026?

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport, not your UAE residency. Emirati passport holders are exempt from the Schengen short-stay visa and may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

UAE residents who hold passports from visa-required countries — including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, and Jordanian nationals — must apply for a Belgium Schengen visa before travel.

Applications are routed through VFS Global, which operates joint visa centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Belgian Embassy in Abu Dhabi makes the final decision on every application.

Types of Belgium Visas

Belgium issues two main categories of visa to UAE residents, split by length of stay. The right one depends on whether you plan to visit Brussels for a short break or move to Belgium for work, study, or family reasons.

Visa Type Purpose Maximum Stay
Schengen Short Stay (Type C) — Tourism Holidays, sightseeing, visiting Antwerp, Bruges, or other Schengen cities 90 days in any 180-day period
Schengen Short Stay (Type C) — Business Meetings, conferences, training, trade fairs 90 days in any 180-day period
Schengen Short Stay (Type C) — Family/Friends Visit Visiting family or friends residing in Belgium 90 days in any 180-day period
Airport Transit (Type A) Transit through a Belgian airport without entering Schengen Transit only
Long Stay (Type D) — Work Employment in Belgium with a work permit More than 90 days
Long Stay (Type D) — Study Enrolment at a Belgian university or recognised institution Duration of course
Long Stay (Type D) — Family Reunification Joining a spouse or family member legally residing in Belgium Linked to sponsor’s residence

How to Apply

Belgium uses a two-step system. You complete the application online first, then attend a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in the UAE.

Online: The Visa on Web (VOW) Portal

All applicants must fill out the Visa on Web (VOW) form first. This is the official Belgian government application portal.

  • Create an account and complete the form for your visa category
  • Print the completed form and barcode page
  • You’ll be redirected to the VFS Global appointment system
  • Apply at least 15 days before travel; up to 6 months in advance is allowed

Incomplete or incorrectly filled forms are the most common reason for refusal at the submission stage.

In Person: VFS Global Appointment

After submitting the VOW form, book a free appointment at one of two VFS centres:

  • Dubai: Wafi Mall, Level 2, Falcon Phase 2, Umm Hurair 2
  • Abu Dhabi: Level B2, The Mall, World Trade Centre, Khalifa Bin Zayed The 1st Street

Submission hours run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; passport collection is from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Fingerprints and a digital photograph are captured at the appointment; for short-stay visas, fingerprints submitted for a previous Schengen visa within the last 59 months may be reused.

Important: Apply at least 15 days before your trip — and ideally 4 to 6 weeks ahead during busy travel periods.

Required Documents

The Belgian Embassy expects a complete file at submission. Missing documents typically lead to refusal rather than a request for more information.

  • Passport: Issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages
  • UAE residence visa: Valid for a minimum of 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area
  • Completed VOW application form: Printed, signed, with barcode page
  • Two recent passport photos: ICAO-compliant, taken within the last 6 months, white background
  • Travel insurance: Schengen-wide cover of at least €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation
  • Confirmed return flight booking and full travel itinerary
  • Hotel reservations covering every night of the stay, or an official invitation if staying with family/friends
  • Personal bank statements: Original, stamped, and signed for the last 3 months
  • Salary certificate / NOC from employer (employees) or trade licence and company documents (self-employed)
  • Emirates ID copy

Long-stay (Type D) applications need additional documents — work permit, university acceptance letter, family reunification paperwork, criminal record certificate, and a medical certificate from an approved doctor.

Fees and Processing Time

Belgium’s current visa-handling fees are listed below. The EUR visa fees are converted and paid in AED at the VFS counter, based on the latest amounts listed by the Belgian Immigration Office.

Item Fee Processing Time
Schengen short-stay visa (adults 12+) €90 15 calendar days (standard); up to 45 if further examination or additional documents are needed
Schengen short-stay visa (children 6–12) €45 15 calendar days
Children under 6 Free 15 calendar days
Long-stay national visa (Type D) €180 Several weeks to several months
VFS Global service charge AED 127.60 per application —

Visa fees are non-refundable, even if the application is refused or withdrawn. Certain students travelling for educational or vocational purposes, researchers, and eligible non-profit event participants aged 25 or under are exempt from the short-stay fee.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • Apply early: 4 to 6 weeks before travel is the safest window, especially between June and August or over the December holidays
  • Book refundable hotels and flights: The embassy expects confirmed bookings, but visas can be refused — use cancellable reservations until the visa is granted
  • Get the right insurance: Schengen rules require a minimum of €30,000 medical cover valid across all Schengen states for the full trip duration
  • Show clear financial ties: Three months of salary credits and steady balances on bank statements reassure the consul you’ll return
  • Be consistent: Dates, hotel addresses, and purpose of travel must match across the VOW form, bookings, and invitation letter
  • Search flights to Brussels and hotels in Brussels on Wego once your visa is confirmed for the best fares and stays

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a Belgium visa from the UAE if I’m not a UAE resident?

No. You must hold a valid UAE residence visa with at least 3 months’ validity beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area. Tourists in the UAE on a visit visa should apply from the country where they are legally resident.

Does a Belgium Schengen visa let me visit other European countries?

Yes. A Belgium-issued Schengen visa is valid for travel across all 29 Schengen countries, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. Belgium should be your main destination; if your stays are equal, apply through the country of first entry.

How long does it take to get a Belgium visa from Dubai?

Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the appointment date. It may be extended up to 45 days if further examination or additional documents are needed. Long-stay (Type D) visas can take several weeks to several months.

Do I need to give biometrics every time I apply?

For short-stay visas, if you’ve submitted fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the past 59 months, they can usually be reused. Long-stay applicants may still need to appear in person for biometrics.

Can I extend my Belgium Schengen visa once I’m there?

Extensions are granted only in exceptional cases — force majeure, humanitarian reasons, or serious personal circumstances. Apply at the local Belgian commune before your visa expires.
