Who needs a Brazil e-Visa
The requirement applies to all ordinary passport holders from the United States, Canada, and Australia traveling to Brazil for short stays.
This covers tourism, business meetings, sports and artistic activities, and airport transit. Holders of valid Brazilian residence permits or existing physical visas are not affected.
Effective date and current status
The visa requirement officially took effect on 10 April 2025, ending the unilateral visa-waiver Brazil had offered these three countries since 2019.
From early 2026, the e-Visa is fully integrated with airline departure-control systems. Boarding passes will not be issued to eligible nationals without a valid e-Visa code on file.

How to apply
All applications are submitted exclusively through the official VFSeVisa portal at brazil.vfsevisa.com. Walk-in consular submissions are not accepted for the e-Visa.
The process is a five-step online form with document uploads and online payment.
- Create an account on the VFSeVisa portal and select your nationality.
- Complete the application form with personal, passport, and travel details.
- Upload supporting documents (see the checklist below).
- Pay the US$80.90 fee online by card.
- Submit and wait for the approval email with your e-Visa PDF.
Required documents
Keep digital files ready before starting the form to avoid time-outs.
- Color scan of your passport’s biodata page, valid through your intended return date.
- Recent ICAO-compliant passport-style photo on a white background.
- Travel itinerary or flight booking confirmation.
- Proof of accommodation in Brazil (hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or host invitation letter).
- Proof of financial means, such as a recent bank statement, if requested.
Brazilian consular officials may request additional documents on a case-by-case basis. Submit clear, legible files to avoid delays.
Processing time
Most e-Visas are approved within 48 to 72 hours. Official guidance allows up to 10 business days, and processing can stretch closer to that during peak demand windows such as Carnival season.
Apply at least two to three weeks before your departure. Print the approved e-Visa PDF or save a clear digital copy — airlines will check it at the boarding gate.
What this means at the airport
Airlines flying to Brazil have configured their departure-control systems to validate the e-Visa code before issuing a boarding pass. Travelers without a valid e-Visa will be denied boarding at the origin airport.
On arrival in Brazil, immigration officers may still ask for a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds, in line with standard entry checks.
Why Brazil reinstated the visa
The Brazilian government has framed the move as a return to diplomatic reciprocity. US, Canadian, and Australian authorities continue to require Brazilians to obtain visas, so Brazil is reapplying the same rule to their citizens.
Officials have estimated the e-Visa fee will generate around R$480 million in consular revenue in its first 12 months.
