British Airways has pushed its Middle East flights into autumn 2026 after a fresh Iranian attack on Kuwait’s main airport on 3 June reignited regional tensions.
Here’s how to get a refund, rebook, or claim your passenger rights.
Which British Airways Routes Are Affected?
BA has extended its Middle East suspensions into autumn 2026, scrapping a planned summer restart and permanently withdrawing one route. For the latest route-by-route picture, see our British Airways flight status guide.
| Route | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| London Heathrow – Dubai | Suspended until at least 25 October | A planned 1 July restart was scrapped; no service before late October 2026 |
| London Heathrow – Doha | Reduced service | Dropping to 1x daily from 1 August 2026 (down from 2x daily pre-crisis) |
| London Heathrow – Tel Aviv | Suspended until at least 25 October | Ben Gurion Airport operating with severe restrictions |
| London Heathrow – Riyadh | Reduced service | Dropping to 1x daily from 8 August 2026 (down from 2x daily) |
| London Heathrow – Jeddah | Permanently cancelled | Route withdrawn from 24 April 2026; no return planned |
| London Heathrow – Abu Dhabi | Suspended until 25 October | Expected back as part of BA’s winter 2026 schedule |
| London Heathrow – Amman | Suspended until 25 October | No bookings accepted until autumn 2026 |
| London Heathrow – Bahrain | Suspended until 25 October | No bookings accepted until autumn 2026 |
| European short-haul network | Disrupted | Knock-on cancellations and delays from crew/aircraft repositioning |
This situation remains fluid. BA is reviewing its schedule regularly, and dates may shift. Check your specific flight using Wego’s flight tracker or BA’s Manage My Booking portal for the latest updates.
What’s the latest?
The 8 April 2026 US-Iran ceasefire still holds but is fragile. On 3 June, an Iranian drone and missile attack struck Kuwait’s main airport, killing one person and damaging a terminal — the worst escalation since the truce. See what the faltering ceasefire means for travel.
European aviation regulators still advise carriers to avoid much of the region’s airspace, which is why BA and other European airlines remain grounded on these routes. The restart dates above could slip again if tensions rise.
How to Check If Your British Airways Flight Is Cancelled
- Wego flight tracker — The fastest way to check is on Wego’s British Airways tracking page, which shows all BA departures and arrivals with live status data. You can also search by airport or flight number on the main flight tracker.
- British Airways website or app — Log in to Manage My Booking on ba.com with your booking reference and last name. The BA app also sends push notifications when your flight status changes.
- Heathrow Airport live boards — Check the Heathrow departure board on Wego for real-time gate and status information, especially if you’re already at the airport.
- Third-party flight trackers — Independent flight tracking websites can provide a second source of confirmation if you want to cross-reference.
Your Options: Refund, Rebook, or Reroute
| Option | Best For | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Full refund | Travellers who no longer need or want to fly | Cash back to original payment method within 7 days (UK261 mandate) |
| Rebooking | Travellers with flexible dates who still want to go | Free change to a later BA flight; one additional free change permitted; valid for travel through 31 October 2026 |
| Rerouting | Travellers who need to get there now | Alternative route via a different hub or a different airline, arranged by BA |
Full refund: Take the cash if your plans have changed. BA must process it within 7 days under UK261. Don’t accept a voucher unless you want one — cash is your right when BA cancels.
Rebooking: If you can wait, BA moves you to a later flight for free, plus one more free change. With Gulf routes not back before late October, availability is tight — rebook early.
Rerouting: Need to travel now? Ask BA to reroute you via another hub, such as Istanbul or Athens. If they can’t offer a suitable option within 24 hours, you can book comparable transport yourself and claim it back.
How to Get a Refund from British Airways
If you booked directly with BA
- Go to Manage My Booking on ba.com.
- Enter your booking reference and last name.
- Select the cancelled flight and choose the refund option.
- When prompted, choose “refund to original payment method” — not a voucher or travel credit. Be explicit about this.
- Confirm the request. Under UK261, BA must process your refund within 7 days.
Can’t refund online (e.g. you paid cash, or the portal won’t cooperate)? Call BA on +44 344 493 0747 (amendments and cancellations). Wait times are long — try early mornings or Sundays.
If you booked through a travel agent or OTA
Your first point of contact is the agent or platform you booked with. BA sends refunds back through the original channel, so it can’t refund you directly if a third party sold the ticket. Reference BA’s cancellation — most agents are waiving penalty fees.
If your agent is unresponsive or refuses, escalate: contact BA directly with your booking number, and file a complaint with your national consumer protection body.
How to Rebook Your British Airways Flight
- Log in to Manage My Booking on ba.com.
- Select the affected booking and choose “change flight.”
- Browse available dates. BA is currently waiving change fees for all passengers affected by the Middle East suspensions, with the rebooking window valid through 31 October 2026.
- If no suitable BA flights are available on your preferred dates, call BA at +44 344 493 0747 to discuss rerouting options via partner airlines or alternative hubs.
BA has confirmed that passengers can change their rebooked flight once more for free. If the situation evolves and dates shift again, you won’t be penalised. There are no fare difference charges when rebooking onto the same route at a later date within the crisis rebooking window.
If you’re a British Airways Executive Club member, check for additional flexibility options in your account. Gold and Silver members may have access to priority rebooking through dedicated phone lines.
Passengers on the cancelled Jeddah route
BA permanently withdrew its London Heathrow–Jeddah service from 24 April 2026. If you held a booking on this route, you are entitled to a full refund or a free rebooking onto BA’s remaining Riyadh service. Alternatively, consider other airlines flying to Jeddah — Saudia operates direct London–Jeddah services.
If You’re Stranded Abroad
If your return BA flight from a Gulf destination has been cancelled, other carriers are still flying. Emirates is running an expanded schedule from Dubai and Qatar Airways is operating from Doha — search alternative flights to London on Wego, and weigh the trade-offs first with our guide to alternative departure options before re-routing.
Keep all receipts for any overnight stay; BA may have to reimburse reasonable expenses under UK261. Check the FCDO travel advice page and register your presence — it currently advises against all but essential travel to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE, and tells British nationals there to shelter in place. For local help, see our guides on who can help if you’re stranded in the UAE or Qatar.
Your Passenger Rights
As a UK carrier flying mostly to and from UK airports, BA is covered by UK261 (and EC261 on departures from EU airports). When BA cancels, you’re entitled to a refund or rerouting, plus care and assistance — meals, refreshments and accommodation — while you wait.
Cash compensation is separate: it doesn’t apply when a cancellation is down to “extraordinary circumstances,” and the UK CAA has classified the Middle East conflict as exactly that. Your refund, rebooking and care rights stand regardless. For the full rules and how to claim, see the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s official guidance.
Will Travel Insurance Cover This?
Whether you’re covered depends mostly on when you bought your policy. Policies bought before the conflict began (before late February 2026) usually cover war or civil-unrest disruption; policies bought after it was in the news typically exclude it as a “known event.”
Whatever your cover, keep all documentation, file your claim promptly, and check whether your credit card includes travel disruption protection. For a fuller breakdown, see our guide on whether travel insurance covers war-related flight cancellations.

Tips for Affected Travellers
- Always request a cash refund, not a voucher. BA may default to offering travel credits. You are legally entitled to a cash refund under UK261 — be explicit when requesting it.
- Don’t panic-book replacement flights at inflated prices. Fares on alternative routes have spiked. If your travel isn’t urgent, wait and shop around on Wego for competitive options.
- Document everything. Screenshot your cancellation notification, save all emails from BA, keep receipts for meals, transport, and accommodation. This documentation is essential for insurance claims, compensation disputes, and expense reimbursement.
- Call and use the app simultaneously. If you’re at the airport, don’t just queue at the service desk. Call BA and use the app at the same time — whichever channel resolves your issue first, use it.
- Check your credit card’s travel protection. Many premium credit cards offer travel disruption coverage that kicks in even when insurance doesn’t. Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire, and similar cards often include this benefit.
- Consider indirect routes if you need to travel urgently. If you must get to a Gulf destination, look at routing via Istanbul, Athens, or Cairo on other carriers. Search alternative flights to Dubai on Wego to compare your options.
- Register with the FCDO if you’re abroad. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is coordinating support for British nationals in the region. Register on their website for updates.
- Book flexible fares for any replacement travel. Given the volatility of the situation, don’t lock yourself into a non-refundable fare. Pay the premium for flexibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a full cash refund if British Airways cancels my flight?
Yes. Under UK261, you are entitled to a full refund to your original payment method if BA cancels your flight. This must be processed within 7 days. Do not accept a voucher or travel credit unless you genuinely prefer one — always request cash.
When will BA resume Middle East flights?
BA has delayed its Middle East return. Dubai, Tel Aviv, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Amman are now suspended until at least 25 October 2026. Doha drops to one daily flight from 1 August and Riyadh from 8 August. The Jeddah route is permanently cancelled. All dates depend on the security situation and could change.
Does the US-Iran ceasefire mean flights are resuming?
Not yet. The 8 April 2026 ceasefire remains in place but is fragile — an Iranian attack on Kuwait’s main airport on 3 June marked the most serious escalation since the truce. BA has pushed its Gulf restart into autumn, with most routes suspended until at least 25 October 2026.
Are domestic UK flights and European short-haul routes affected?
Not directly by the airspace closures, but there have been knock-on cancellations and delays on BA’s European network as crew and aircraft are repositioned to cover the Middle East changes. If you have a short-haul booking, check its status before travelling.
What if I booked through a travel agent or online booking site?
Contact the travel agent or OTA first — BA processes refunds back through the original booking channel. If your agent is unresponsive, contact BA directly with your booking reference and escalate if needed.
Will British Airways pay for my hotel if I’m stranded?
Under UK261, BA must provide meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation during disruptions. However, BA may argue the conflict constitutes extraordinary circumstances, which could limit their duty of care obligations. Keep all receipts regardless — you may need them for an insurance or regulatory claim.
Can I rebook onto another airline if BA can’t get me there?
If BA cannot offer a suitable rerouting within 24 hours of your original departure, you may be entitled to arrange your own comparable transport and claim the cost back. Document everything and keep proof of BA’s inability to reroute you.
What happened to BA’s Jeddah route?
BA permanently cancelled its London Heathrow–Jeddah service from 24 April 2026. Affected passengers are entitled to a full refund or can rebook onto BA’s Riyadh service. For direct flights to Jeddah, consider alternatives on Wego — Saudia operates direct London–Jeddah services.
Will I get compensation on top of my refund?
Unlikely for the Middle East cancellations specifically. BA will almost certainly classify the armed conflict and airspace closures as “extraordinary circumstances” under UK261, exempting them from compensation payments. The UK CAA has confirmed this classification. Your rights to a refund, rebooking, and care/assistance are unaffected — those apply regardless.
What if my connecting flight through a Gulf hub was cancelled?
If your entire journey was booked on one BA itinerary, BA is responsible for getting you to your final destination — not just the cancelled segment. Request a rerouting via an unaffected hub, or take a full refund for the entire journey.
