Wego pulled the fares below from live searches on its own metasearch engine on 13 August 2026. Each one is the cheapest return economy itinerary offered on British Airways for a departure from London on 22 September 2026, returning 29 September 2026, for one adult, quoted in US dollars.
Every figure comes from a real search, so it moves with live availability.
The spread is wide. A short hop to Madrid clears at under USD 200 return, while Johannesburg, one of the longest nonstops in the network, runs six times higher.
The transatlantic block is unusually tight: Los Angeles, New York and Boston all land within USD 30 of each other despite the Los Angeles flight running about three and a half hours longer than the New York one, which makes the West Coast sector far better value per hour in the air.
British Airways: cheapest return fare by route, London departures

All eight are nonstop in both directions, departing Heathrow, Gatwick or London City. Short-haul services may be flown by a British Airways subsidiary or a codeshare partner under a BA flight number. Dubai was excluded because no British Airways nonstop was returned for these dates; the only itineraries offered connected via Doha. Fares are dynamic and change constantly; treat this as a same-week reference point rather than a live quote.
Fares on these routes reprice constantly, and September dates in particular soften once the summer peak clears.
Compare current fares on Wego before you commit, and widen the search by a day or two on either side, since a midweek return often undercuts the weekend by a meaningful margin.
Hub, network and route map
Heathrow Terminal 5 is the centre of the airline. It opened on 27 March 2008, was designed by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour and Partners, cost GBP 4.3 billion to build, and is used exclusively by British Airways and Iberia, with capacity for more than 30 million travellers a year.
In 2019 it served more than 115 destinations. Six lounges across Heathrow carry the Galleries name, five of them inside Terminal 5 and one in Terminal 3.
Across the whole airline, British Airways flies to around 200 destinations in more than 75 countries.
Gatwick is the second London base. British Airways operates from the South Terminal with dedicated check-in in Zone A, 29 check-in kiosks and 12 self-service bag drops, plus a lounge seating 477 people.
Long-haul flying from Gatwick concentrates on the US and the Caribbean, with British Airways Euroflyer running the short-haul programme.
At London City Airport, British Airways is the largest carrier by routes, aircraft movements and customer numbers, which makes it the practical choice for anyone based in the eastern half of the capital.
If you are building a stopover into a longer trip, Terminal 5 sits on both the Elizabeth line and the Heathrow Express, so an overnight in town is realistic even on a short layover.

Fleet and aircraft
- Around 280 aircraft in service. British Airways lists a fleet spanning the A380, A350, 787, 777, A321, A320 and A319, serving roughly 200 destinations in more than 75 countries.
- Twelve Airbus A380s, all being rebuilt. The retrofit takes each aircraft from 469 seats to 421: 12 First suites, 110 Club Suites, 84 World Traveller Plus and 215 World Traveller. That gives the type the largest business class cabin of any A380 in service. The first refurbished aircraft is expected back in service later in 2026, with the programme finishing by the end of 2027.
- Boeing 787s carry the new long-haul routes. The 787 flies the St. Louis service launched in April 2026 and will operate the Melbourne route via Kuala Lumpur from January 2027. The 787-8 was also the first sub-fleet to receive Starlink.
- Short-haul is A320 family. The Guernsey service launched in April 2026 uses A319 and A320neo aircraft, and the Tivat route flies on an A320.
- Starlink Wi-Fi rollout is running behind its own pace. Only around five Boeing 787-8 aircraft had Starlink fitted as of August 2026, after British Airways paused further installations over the summer 2026 peak season to avoid disrupting schedules. The airline says installations resume from October 2026, working toward its target of fitting more than 300 aircraft within two years of the March 2026 launch, across long-haul and short-haul but excluding BA CityFlyer.
Baggage allowance and check-in
British Airways economy fares are sold in tiers, and the difference between them comes down to bags and flexibility.
Every fare includes a free hand bag and cabin bag, in every cabin. The hand bag goes under the seat in front and can measure up to 40 x 30 x 15cm (16 x 12 x 6in), while the cabin bag goes in the overhead locker and can measure up to 56 x 45 x 25cm (22 x 18 x 10in) including wheels and handles, as long as you can lift it in unassisted.
The checked bag is what catches travellers out. The cheapest economy fares, sold as Basic, carry hand baggage only, so a hold bag has to be bought separately at booking or later through Manage My Booking.
Adding it online costs less than paying at the airport, and the gap is large enough to matter on a family booking. Checked baggage allowance then rises by cabin and by British Airways Club, oneworld or AerClub tier, as set out below.

Gold, Emerald and Platinum members get an extra checked bag in most cabins, and Silver, Sapphire, Concierge, Blue and Bronze members get a higher 32kg weight limit per bag in Economy and Premium Economy.

Online check-in opens well before departure through ba.com and the British Airways app, and it is the fastest way through the airport: you go straight to a bag drop desk, or with hand baggage only, directly to security.

Loyalty programme
The airline’s loyalty scheme is the British Airways Club, which replaced the Executive Club branding on 1 April 2025. It runs on two currencies.
Avios are the spendable points you redeem for reward flights, upgrades, seat selection and holidays. Tier Points are the status currency, and they determine whether you sit at Blue, Bronze, Silver or Gold, which in turn governs lounge access, priority boarding and extra baggage.
Since 1 April 2025 Tier Points have been earned on spend, replacing the old model based on distance flown and cabin booked. Members earn 1 Tier Point for every GBP 1 of eligible spend on British Airways flights.
Add-ons such as bags, seat selection and Sustainable Aviation Fuel contributions earn at double that rate, 2 Tier Points per GBP 1, with SAF contributions capped at 2,000 Tier Points a membership year.
Eligible spend covers the fare and carrier-imposed charges, while airport charges and government taxes are excluded. British Airways Holidays packages earn Tier Points on the value of the whole package with no cap.
The practical effect is that expensive short trips now build status faster than cheap long ones, which suits business travellers and works against anyone chasing status on discounted long-haul economy.
How to contact British Airways or manage a booking
Most changes are self-service. Manage My Booking on ba.com and the rebuilt British Airways app both let you select seats, add bags, request special meals, check in, and store a boarding pass in a mobile wallet.
The app also carries real-time journey updates for Heathrow and Gatwick, terminal maps and Terminal 5 lounge occupancy, which is genuinely useful when a gate changes late. Reward flight redemption and baggage tracking are being added in later phases of the rollout.
For anything the app cannot handle, British Airways runs telephone contact centres, with a Newcastle centre reopened in June 2026 under a GBP 17 million investment.
If a flight is delayed, cancelled or downgraded, or if bags go missing, claims are filed through the customer relations section of ba.com, and you will need the booking reference, the flight numbers and any receipts for expenses you want reimbursed.
Flights departing the UK or the EU, and flights arriving in the UK or EU on a UK or EU carrier, fall under UK261 and EU261 rules, so keep the paperwork.

Which terminal does British Airways use at Heathrow?
