Mumbai and Chennai both fly to the same country, yet the gap between them is $2,105 — more than the cheapest ticket itself. The pattern isn’t distance.
Mumbai and Delhi are Air India’s hub cities for its one true India-USA nonstop, so connecting airlines have to price against that option. Chennai has no nonstop flight to the USA at all, so nothing keeps its connecting fares down.
If your home city has no nonstop option, budget for a higher connecting fare rather than a discount.
Why does the nonstop option cost 80% more?
Air India runs the only true nonstop between India and the USA today: Delhi to New York, currently about seven flights a week. Its Delhi-Chicago and Delhi-Newark nonstops are both suspended as of August 2026, a result of high jet fuel costs and airspace restrictions the airline has cited since mid-2026.
On our sample date, that Delhi-New York nonstop priced at $6,032 round trip. The cheapest one-stop option on the identical city pair, Saudia via Jeddah, priced at $3,342 — 80% less for the same cabin.
Only a handful of airlines sell a premium seat on this exact city pair, and steady demand keeps the nonstop price up. A one-stop seat through the Gulf has far more competition, so it prices to win the booking.
Weigh the roughly $2,690 saving against six-plus extra hours in transit before assuming the nonstop is the default choice.
What you actually get in the cabin
The fare alone doesn’t tell you which seat you’re buying. On these routes it depends heavily on the airline, and for one carrier, the specific aircraft.

The cheapest and priciest months to fly
We repeated the Delhi-USA business class search for a round trip departing the middle of each month, across the next ten months.
The cheapest window sits in October through December 2026, at $2,590 — a full $752 below our September sample. Prices climb again into early 2027 and edge back up by June 2027.
At about ₹95.24 to the US dollar (US Federal Reserve reference rate, 6 August 2026), that’s roughly ₹2.47 lakh for the cheapest window and ₹3.18 lakh for the priciest.
How to bring the price down
- Start from Mumbai if you can. Its EgyptAir connection through Cairo was the cheapest of the six cities we checked, by a wide margin.
- Don’t assume nonstop is available. Delhi is the only Indian city with a true nonstop to the USA right now, and it costs about 80% more than the cheapest connection.
- Check the aircraft type before booking Air India. Its lie-flat suite flies on newer 787 and A350 jets; some older aircraft still carry a recliner-style seat.
- Watch October through December 2026 for Delhi departures. That was the cheapest window in our sample, well ahead of the usual winter price climb.
- Confirm your connecting hub is running normally before booking. Gulf-connecting itineraries have faced occasional disruptions in 2026 tied to regional airspace conditions.
- Set a price alert on Wego rather than checking manually. Business class inventory on India-USA routes moves in blocks, and a fare can jump overnight.
