Canada eTA vs Visitor Visa: What’s the Difference
The two documents differ in cost, speed, validity, and how you apply.

The eTA only works for air travel. If UAE or Qatar nationals fly into the US first and plan to drive, take a bus, train, or boat across the border, they don’t need an eTA or a visitor visa as visa-exempt travellers, just a valid passport. eTA-X applicants from select visa-required countries, however, must have a visitor visa to arrive by land or sea.
How to Apply From the GCC
The application path depends entirely on which document you need.
For a Canada eTA
UAE and Qatar nationals apply directly through the official IRCC eTA portal. The process takes about 10-15 minutes.
You need three things:
- A valid passport from a visa-exempt country
- A working email address
- A credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay, or JCB) to pay the CAD 7 fee
FIFA-specific tip from IRCC: In the Background Questions section, type “FIFA World Cup 26” in the free text field. This is for tracking only and does not affect approval.
Most eTAs are approved within minutes. Some applications require additional documents and can take up to 72 hours, so don’t apply at the airport gate.

The 15 Eligible Visa-Required Countries

The eligible nationalities are: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay.
So a Filipino expat in Dubai with a US B1/B2 visa flying to Toronto Pearson can apply for the CAD 7 eTA instead of a full visa.
An Indian, Pakistani, or Saudi traveller with a US visa cannot. They still need the full visitor visa. If you already have a multi-entry Canadian visitor visa from a previous trip, use it. There is no need to apply for an eTA on top.

- Apply 3-4 months before travel for visitor visas. eTA can be later but allow 72 hours minimum.
- Book refundable flights and hotels until your visa is approved. A FIFA ticket does not guarantee entry.
