Frequently asked questions
Which provinces get Truth and Reconciliation off?
Of the four here, only British Columbia. It is also a Canada Labour Code holiday, so federally regulated staff get it anywhere. Ontario and Quebec treat it as a working day. Alberta calls it optional, which an employer may grant but need not, so this page counts it as a working day there too.
Is Remembrance Day statutory in Ontario?
No. It is not one of the nine public holidays in Ontario’s Employment Standards Act, and the province’s own guide says "the employer is not required to do so under the ESA". Statutory in B.C., Alberta and under the Canada Labour Code. Quebec does not have it either.
I work for a bank, an airline or a telecom. Which list applies?
The federal one. The Canada Labour Code sets ten general holidays: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Truth and Reconciliation, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It is the only list giving you both Remembrance Day and Boxing Day wherever you live, and the only one here without Family Day. It covers roughly six per cent of Canadian workers.
Is the August Civic Holiday a real statutory holiday?
In British Columbia yes, as B.C. Day. In Ontario it is widely taken but is not in the Employment Standards Act, so there is no entitlement to the day or to holiday pay. Alberta treats Heritage Day as optional. Quebec does not observe it at all.
Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday. Do I get a day back?
In Ontario, possibly, and it is the employer’s call. The ESA lets them either substitute another day off or pay public holiday pay instead, the second needing your written agreement. Every figure here assumes you get nothing back; if you do, the ten day Christmas run costs three leave days, not four. Elsewhere the question does not arise, because Boxing Day is not statutory in Quebec, B.C. or Alberta.
How do I get ten days off at Christmas for four leave days?
Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday and New Year’s Day the Friday after, with two full weekends between. Book Monday 28 to Thursday 31 December and the block runs 25 December to 3 January. Three leave days would only give you six, so the fourth is worth four days on its own. Nothing else in the Canadian year pays like that.
Does Quebec have a Family Day?
No, and neither does the Canada Labour Code. Quebec has two days nobody else gets: Saint-Jean-Baptiste on 24 June, and the Victoria Day Monday, which it calls the National Patriots’ Day. It also lets the employer pick Good Friday or Easter Monday rather than fixing one.
