Cathay Pacific has raised its fuel surcharges twice in less than three weeks, pushing the per-sector levy on long-haul flights to HK$1,560 (approximately US$200) as of 1 April 2026.
Here’s what the surcharges look like now, how they’ve changed, and what you can do to manage the extra cost.
What Is the Cathay Pacific Fuel Surcharge?
A fuel surcharge is an additional fee airlines add on top of the base fare to offset rising jet fuel costs. Cathay Pacific labels it as a carrier-imposed surcharge (YQ), and it appears as a separate line item on your ticket.
The surcharge applies per flight sector, not per round trip. That means if you fly from Los Angeles to Bangkok via Hong Kong, you’ll pay the surcharge twice: once for the LA-to-Hong Kong leg and once for the Hong Kong-to-Bangkok leg.
It’s the same amount regardless of whether you’re flying economy, premium economy, business, or first class. Award tickets redeemed through Asia Miles also carry the surcharge.

How Much Extra You’ll Pay
Cathay Pacific categorises its routes into three tiers: short-haul, medium-haul, and long-haul. The surcharge has increased dramatically in 2026, with two major hikes in quick succession.
Current Rates (From 1 April 2026)
| Route Type | Per Sector (HKD) | Per Sector (Approx. USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Short-haul (e.g., Singapore, Taipei, mainland China) | HK$389 | ~US$50 |
| Medium-haul (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai, South Asia) | HK$725 | ~US$93 |
| Long-haul (e.g., London, New York, Sydney) | HK$1,560 | ~US$200 |
These rates are per sector, so a round trip doubles the cost. A return flight from Hong Kong to London now carries approximately HK$3,120 (~US$400) in fuel surcharges before you factor in the base fare, taxes, and other fees.
How Rates Have Changed in 2026
To put the current rates in perspective, here’s how the surcharge has escalated since February 2026:
| Route Type | Before 18 Mar (HKD) | From 18 Mar (HKD) | From 1 Apr (HKD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-haul | HK$142 | HK$290 | HK$389 |
| Medium-haul | HK$264 | HK$541 | HK$725 |
| Long-haul | HK$569 | HK$1,164 | HK$1,560 |
Long-haul surcharges have jumped by roughly 174% in under two months. Short-haul and medium-haul surcharges have similarly nearly tripled from their February levels.
Who’s Affected and What to Know
Revenue Tickets
If you’re buying a regular ticket on Cathay Pacific, the fuel surcharge is baked into the total price you see at checkout. The surcharge in effect at the time of ticket issuance is the one you pay, regardless of your travel date.
Tickets issued before 1 April 2026 are not affected by the latest increase, even if you’re flying after that date.
Award Tickets
Asia Miles award tickets carry the same fuel surcharge. If you redeem miles for a long-haul flight and your ticket is issued on or after 1 April 2026, you’ll pay HK$1,560 per sector in surcharges on top of the miles cost.
However, not all loyalty programmes charge Cathay Pacific’s fuel surcharge. Notably, American Airlines AAdvantage does not pass on carrier surcharges when booking Cathay Pacific as a oneworld partner.
If you have AAdvantage miles, this is one way to avoid the extra cost entirely.
Connecting Flights
Since the surcharge applies per sector, connecting itineraries through Hong Kong will incur the surcharge on each leg. A passenger flying Los Angeles to Singapore via Hong Kong would pay the long-haul rate for LA-HKG and the short-haul rate for HKG-Singapore, on each direction.
HK Express
Cathay Pacific’s low-cost subsidiary HK Express operates separately and may have different surcharge policies. Check HK Express directly for the latest rates on their routes.
How to Minimise the Impact on Your Budget
Book Sooner Rather Than Later
Surcharges are locked at the rate in effect when your ticket is issued. With Cathay Pacific now reviewing rates every two weeks, prices can move quickly.
If you’re planning a trip, booking earlier locks in the current rate even if surcharges rise again before your departure.
Compare Airlines on Wego
Not every airline has raised surcharges at the same pace or to the same level. Use Wego’s flight search to compare total prices across carriers on the same route.
The total fare, including surcharges and taxes, is what matters when comparing options.
Consider Partner Airlines Without Surcharges
If you’re redeeming miles, check whether the loyalty programme you’re using passes on fuel surcharges. Booking Cathay Pacific through American Airlines AAdvantage avoids surcharges entirely.
Other oneworld programmes like Qantas Frequent Flyer and British Airways Avios do charge surcharges on Cathay Pacific redemptions, though Avios amounts on partner flights are typically lower than on BA-operated routes.
Watch for Downward Revisions
Cathay Pacific’s fortnightly review means surcharges can drop as quickly as they rise. Keep an eye on Cathay Pacific’s fuel surcharge updates page and the IATA Jet Fuel Price Monitor for signs of easing.
Look at Alternate Routings
For travellers in South or Southeast Asia, direct flights on other carriers may carry lower total surcharges than a connecting itinerary through Hong Kong. Search for flights to London, Sydney, or New York on Wego to see all available routing and pricing options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the fuel surcharge apply to all cabin classes?
Yes. Cathay Pacific charges the same fuel surcharge per sector regardless of whether you’re flying economy, premium economy, business, or first class.
Will my existing ticket be affected by the surcharge increase?
No. The surcharge that applies is the one in effect when your ticket is issued. If you booked before 1 April 2026, you keep the earlier, lower rate even if your travel date is after April.
Can the surcharge go down?
Yes. Cathay Pacific is reviewing surcharges every two weeks (instead of monthly) as a temporary measure. If jet fuel prices fall, the surcharge can be revised downward at the next review period.
Are Asia Miles award tickets subject to the fuel surcharge?
Yes. Award tickets booked through Asia Miles carry the fuel surcharge at the rate in effect when the ticket is issued. To avoid surcharges entirely, consider redeeming through American Airlines AAdvantage, which does not pass on Cathay Pacific’s carrier surcharges.
What currency is the surcharge charged in?
Cathay Pacific calculates fuel surcharges in US dollars, but tickets purchased in Hong Kong, Canada, and New Zealand are collected in the local currency (HKD, CAD, and NZD respectively). In other markets, the surcharge is collected in USD or converted at the prevailing rate.
