The Dakar Rally, held annually by the Amaury Sport Organisation, is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the pursuit of extremes. This rally raid is an orienteering race that unites elite rally raid riders and drivers with passionate amateurs, all driven by a shared dream of conquering the Dakar Rally challenge.

The Dakar Rally was first held in 1978 in the bustling city of Paris, France. It then moved to Dakar, Senegal, before shifting to the stunning landscapes of South America from 2009 to 2019. Since 2020, the event has been hosted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the vast desert becomes the backdrop for daring exploits and awe-inspiring feats. The Kingdom is preparing to host its fourth edition of the event in 2024.

For over four decades, the Dakar Rally has attracted approximately 500 adventurers each year from more than 60 different nationalities. They come together for an incredible 15-day competition that showcases extraordinary human achievements. Whether they’re on a bike, navigating a quad, driving a car, or commanding a truck, participants dive headfirst into the adventure of a lifetime.

Dakar Rally 2024 route

The 2024 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia is set to be a more challenging endeavor for both the participants and their vehicles compared to previous editions. The first week, commencing in AlUla, will test the racers’ endurance against high temperatures. Adding a new layer of complexity is a 48-hour stage spread over two days, during which participants, dispersed across eight bivouacs, will largely be left to their own devices.

The rest day in Riyadh offers a brief respite, as the route from there to the finish line in Yanbu is fraught with tricky terrain and numerous navigation challenges that could alter the course of the competition at any moment. The race will also pass through various stages in locations around Saudi Arabia, such as Al Salamiya, Al Duwadimi, Al Hofuf, and Ha’il, between the start at AlUla and the finish at Yanbu.

The total distance of the Dakar Rally is 7,891km, with 4,727km being timed specials where the Dakarists race against the clock. This route is the longest since the event’s inception in Saudi Arabia, with competitors spending their nights in trailers and even under canvas during the marathon and 48-hour Chrono stages.

Here is the schedule for the different stages and races of the Dakar Rally 2024.
