What is it: A natural swimming pool where you can float mere inches from a 100-meter waterfall drop, with only a rocky ledge preventing you from plunging into the thundering void below.
Getting there: Accessible only via guided boat tours operated by Green Safaris from the Livingstone Island Launch Site between the Royal Livingstone Hotel and Livingstone town.
The pool’s dramatic setting has attracted thrill-seekers from around the globe: visitors literally swim to the edge of Victoria Falls, where rushing waters push them to the brink and only a natural rock barrier stops them from going over the edge.
The experience includes wading through the river and scrambling over rocks to reach the pool, then taking a short swim across the Zambezi – first against the current, then downstream into the pool itself.
Experienced guides ensure every visitor’s safety through careful instruction and constant supervision, but there’s a certain level of inherent risk and the tours require a signed waiver.
How to visit it
From Zimbabwe, shuttles depart from The Kingdom Hotel at a cost (typically $15, but might vary). Border crossing required, so consider purchasing a KAZA Univisa for $50 allowing travel between Zambia and Zimbabwe for 30 days.
Devil’s Pool operates exclusively through Green Safaris, offering five daily tours during the dry season when conditions permit safe access to this natural wonder.
What you can’t do is visit Devil’s Pool independently or during the rainy season. The pool is completely closed from January to mid-August when water levels are too high and currents too dangerous.
What you can do is book a guided tour during the dry season (usually mid-August to mid-January), with October and November being the most reliable months when water flow is at its lowest. This still depends on Zambezi water levels.
Advance online reservation is required through Tongabezi Lodge, as only 24 people are allowed on Livingstone Island at one time.
