India’s mass immunization drive against the deadly coronavirus was off to a great start but faced some bumps along the way due to the limited availability of the vaccine vials. Another major complaint from citizens was the long queues and lack of management at the vaccination centres. Tackling this, some cities in the country have started drive-in vaccination centres.

So where are these drive-in vaccination centres? How can you avail of them?

About drive-in vaccination centres

Drive-through vaccination centres allow beneficiaries to drive and park their vehicles inside.

Indians can now wait for their turn at the centre in the comfort and safety of their car and also get the jab administered by the medical professionals while sitting in their car itself. This not only makes the wait comfortable but also automatically ensures social distancing.

More and more cities are gradually starting such centres, especially for the aged citizens and those who are differently-abled.

Current drive-in vaccination centres

Bhopal

An old drive-in movie theatre in Bhopal has now been transformed into a drive-through vaccination centre by the Madhya Pradesh tourism corporation for everyone above 18 years of age.

Vaccinations are done between 5 PM and 8 PM.

Delhi

A two-day drive-through vaccination camp on May 30 and 31 for those aged 18-44 years is being organised at a mall in the national capital.

People can now drive to DLF Avenue Mall in South Delhi’s Saket and get their jabs without getting out of their cars. The centre will function between 10 am to 4pm today and tomorrow, with 200 slots each.

Max Hospital has collaborated with DLF Avenue mall to organise out the two-day camp, charging ₹ 1,100 per dose.

On May 29, a week-long vaccination drive for all categories above 18 years by Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital also began at Sainik Farms. The hospital is offering Covishield at the same price Rs. 1,100.

Gurugram

The drive-through style of temporary vaccination camps continued with another one being hosted on May 30 and 31 in Gurugram. This one was organised at Candor Techspace (Sector-48), a corporate venue rather than a mall’s parking lot.

This vaccination camp offered Covaxin to citizens aged 45 years or older, for either their first or second shot. One does not need to pre-register on CoWin to try and get vaccinated at this camp. However, only 250 doses were available and people will be vaccinated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mumbai

The capital city of Maharashtra opened its first drive-in vaccination centre for senior citizens above 60 years of age and specially-abled Mumbaikars on 4 May in Dadar. Following its exemplary success, the BMC has duplicated such centres elsewhere too.

The centre is only administering Covishield. People have to compulsorily wait for 30 minutes in the parking lot for observation. The beneficiaries should be accompanied by a driver or attendant and must not drive alone.

BMC has plans to start drive-in vaccination centres in every zone of the city and is considering Andheri Sports Complex, Cooperage Grounds, Wankhede Stadium, Shivaji Stadium, Oval Maidan, MCA Grounds, MIG Grounds and Ghatkopar Police Grounds for the same.

Nagpur

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has made vaccination more convenient for senior citizens aged 60 and above as well as those with disabilities by introducing drive-in vaccination centres in the city.
