Dubai’s Mourning Period: What’s Open and What’s Closed for Tourists and Residents

Last updated: Sep 30, 2026

What’s open and what’s not

Compiled from official announcements and UAE news coverage. Last checked 30 September 2026.
What do you want to check?

No directive yet

Nightlife, bars & live music. No circular has paused entertainment for this mourning period. In previous ones, live music and DJs paused for the opening days, so call ahead if a show matters.

Open as normal

Dining, cafes & hotels. Restaurants, cafes and hotels are serving as normal. Only the entertainment layer, background music or a brunch’s DJ, has paused in past mourning periods, not the meal itself.

Open, fountain softened

Malls, souks & attractions. Dubai Mall and the souks are trading as normal. The Dubai Fountain paused at the start of the mourning period and has since resumed with a quieter show, at lower volume and with a reduced soundtrack, until the mourning period ends, Emaar confirmed.

Open as normal

Beaches, parks & transport. Public beaches, parks, the Metro, taxis and the airport run their normal timetables. None of Dubai’s past mourning periods have changed transport or outdoor access.

No directive yet

Government offices & visas. Flags fly at half-mast for the full 10 days, and no office closure has been announced. In Dubai’s last matching mourning period, in 2021, departments closed for the first 3 days.

Check individually

Sports, weddings & events. Decisions are being made event by event. Saudi National Day’s Dubai celebration moved to 4 October, while Dubai K-Fest’s free opening concerts went ahead on 25 and 26 September after an earlier postponement was reversed. Sporting fixtures are going ahead, Dubai Basketball’s EuroLeague opener included, so check with the organiser first.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of Dubai’s Ruler, passed away on 21 September 2026 at 76. Dubai declared 10 days of mourning, running until 30 September, with flags at half-mast across the emirate. The checker above covers what that means for your plans.

Trip unaffected

The mourning period has not changed flights, hotels or everyday services in Dubai, and no citywide closures have been announced. Some foreign airlines have separate, unrelated suspensions at DXB, so check your airline’s own update before you book.

Questions

Why has Dubai declared a mourning period?

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of Dubai’s Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, passed away on 21 September 2026 at the age of 76.

How long does the mourning period last?

Dubai’s Ruler’s Court declared 10 days of official mourning from 21 September 2026, ending on Wednesday, 30 September, with flags flown at half-mast across the emirate throughout. No extension has been announced.

Will my flight or hotel booking be affected?

Not because of the mourning period. It has not changed airport operations or hotel stays in Dubai, and it affects entertainment and some events, not travel logistics. Separately, some foreign airlines have suspended their Dubai routes for reasons unrelated to the mourning, so check your airline’s own travel update for your flight.

Can I still go to bars and restaurants?

Yes. No directive has been issued pausing entertainment for this mourning period. In previous ones, live music and DJs were paused for the opening days, so call ahead if a show is part of your plan.

Are government offices closed?

No closure has been announced for this period as of 30 September. In the closest precedent, Dubai’s 10-day mourning period in 2021, government departments closed for the first 3 days, but that hasn’t been repeated so far this time.

Where can I pay my condolences?

The funeral prayer was held at Zabeel Grand Mosque on Tuesday, 22 September, at 1pm. Condolences are received at Zabeel Majlis through Thursday, 24 September: Tuesday from 4pm to Maghrib prayer, then Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to Dhuhr prayer and again from after Asr prayer to Maghrib prayer.

How this checker was put together
  • Confirmed for this mourning period, from the official announcement: the death, the 10-day duration from 21 September 2026, and the flag order.
  • Official mourning does not automatically close businesses, schools or entertainment; a separate directive is needed for that, and none had been issued as of publication, so every category defaults to “no directive yet” rather than a precedent-based status.
  • Precedent notes are drawn from Dubai’s two closest past mourning periods, a 10-day period in 2021 and a 40-day period in 2022, and are labelled as precedent throughout, never as this period’s confirmed status.
  • Re-checked 24 September 2026: still no citywide business or entertainment circular. Closures are running case by case, some celebrations and concerts postponed, sporting fixtures unaffected, so the Events panel says “check individually” rather than a single status for the whole category. The “Updates since publication” list holds venue, organiser and broadcaster-level changes as they are confirmed, each dated and sourced, and is kept separate from the confirmed-facts table above it so a specific closure is never read as a general rule. This page will be updated again if a citywide circular for this period is confirmed.
  • Re-checked 30 September 2026, the final day of the mourning period: no extension and still no citywide circular. Two earlier entries were superseded and are marked as such rather than deleted: the Dubai Fountain resumed in a softened form on 24 September, and K-Fest’s postponed opening concerts went ahead as originally scheduled. The flights answer is now scoped to the mourning period, because some foreign airlines have separate suspensions at DXB that this page does not track.
