Dubai’s Residency Process in 2026 Just Got Faster and Cheaper — Here’s What Changed

Getting a residency permit in Dubai is about to get faster and cheaper.

On 30 March 2026, Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed approved an AED 1 billion (roughly US $272 million) economic support package that includes streamlined residency processing, government fee deferrals, and relief for the tourism and trade sectors.

The measures took effect on 1 April 2026 and will run for three to six months. They come as Dubai moves to shield businesses and residents from the economic fallout of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Residency Process Is Getting Faster and Cheaper

The headline change for residents and employers is a major overhaul of how residency permits are issued and renewed.

Here’s what the residency streamlining includes:

Faster processing: Residency permit renewals to be processed in 5 working days, down from the current average of 10
Lower costs: Employer sponsorship fees reduced by around 15%, making it cheaper for companies to hire and retain talent
Simplified applications: All application touch-points consolidated onto the ICP Smart Services portal, meaning fewer steps and less paperwork
Priority biometrics: Biometric appointments prioritised for critical-skill categories, so high-demand professionals face fewer delays

These changes apply to both new residency permit applications and renewals. If you’re an employer in Dubai or an expat going through the residency process, you should see noticeably shorter wait times and lower fees starting this month.

What Else Is in the AED 1 Billion Package?

The residency changes are just one part of a broader relief package with five major initiatives. Here’s a quick look at the other measures the Dubai Executive Council approved:

Government fee deferrals for three months. A range of government fees across sectors have been deferred, giving businesses breathing room during a period of regional uncertainty.

Hotels can postpone Tourism Dirham and sales fees. Hotels in Dubai are allowed to defer 100% of their sales fees and the Tourism Dirham levy for three months, boosting liquidity in the hospitality and tourism sector.

Customs grace periods extended from 30 to 90 days. Businesses dealing with imports now have a much longer window to submit customs data, with the possibility of further extensions.

The Virtual Warehouses Initiative launched. Overseen by Dubai Customs, this new programme facilitates temporary imports — including artwork, which is now exempt from customs duties and financial guarantees, with duties on private artworks suspended for three years.

Worker accommodation standards upgraded. A new Health and Safety Strategy for Workers’ Accommodation targets full compliance with international labour standards by 2033, aligning with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.

Dubai Empowerment Strategy expanded. This initiative builds on a programme that has already supported over 1,200 Emiratis and created more than 7,000 job opportunities, now broadening its scope to include home-based entrepreneurship alongside traditional employment pathways.

Dubai’s economy grew 5.4 percent in 2025, with GDP reaching Dh937 billion. The stimulus package signals that the emirate intends to maintain that momentum, making it an even more attractive destination to live and work in.
