Erling Haaland Diet and Workout Secrets: Eat, Train and Recover Like the Norway Striker

Last updated: Jun 25, 2026

The Viking diet behind Haaland’s power

Haaland eats as much as 6,000 calories a day — what Goal describes as nearly three times the recommended intake for an adult male.

The most striking part is his choice of meat. He favours heart and liver, which nutritionists rate among the most nutrient-dense foods available.

His reasoning, shared in his documentary Haaland – The Big Decision and quoted by Goal, is about food quality, not shock value.

“People say meat is bad, but… which meat? The meat you buy at McDonald’s? Or the local cow that eats grass right there? I eat the heart and liver,” he said.

The rest of his plate is built around a few staples:

  • Quality meat: heart, liver and fatty steaks, with grass-fed and local sources prioritised.
  • “Magic potion”: milk blended with spinach and kale, which he carries to training sessions.
  • Filtered water and morning sunlight: small habits he credits for circulation and his body clock.
  • Few extras: he avoids alcohol, sugary drinks and processed food.

The diet is credited with a physical transformation. Haaland told AS he went from 86kg to 94kg, insisting it is “gross muscle mass,” not weight gain.

It is not all discipline, though. His matchday-minus-one ritual is lasagne cooked by his father Alf-Inge, and his rare cheat meal is a kebab from his hometown.

How Haaland trains: cardio, sprints and 1,000 sit-ups

Haaland’s training prioritises speed, agility and raw endurance over bodybuilding-style lifting.

His former RB Salzburg coach Stanislav Macek revealed the striker did 300 press-ups and 1,000 sit-ups a day.

He is also a relentless runner, doing repeated resistance running and sprinting up hills as often as he can, according to Goal.

A typical regime mixes several elements:

  • Conditioning: treadmill work, biking, rowing machine and HIIT sprints to build stamina.
  • Strength: weight training, bodyweight exercises and functional movements rather than heavy bodybuilding.
  • Mobility: 10–20 minutes of stretching to close out sessions and prevent stiffness.

The programme is closely guided by his father and mentor, Alf-Inge Haaland, a former Premier League defender.

Teammate Jack Grealish summed up the intensity to the Daily Mail: “He is the best professional I have ever seen… Recovers in the gym, ice baths, diet. That’s why he is what he is.”

Recovery and sleep: Haaland’s real edge

Recovery is where Haaland goes furthest, treating rest as seriously as training.

He installed a £50,000 cryotherapy chamber at his Cheshire home and uses ice baths and yoga, Goal reports.

Sleep is the centrepiece of his routine. He typically goes to bed around 10pm and switches off all devices beforehand.

To protect his sleep further, he wears blue-light-blocking glasses in the evening to limit screen exposure before bed.

Mental recovery matters too. Haaland meditates daily — the source of his famous cross-legged goal celebration — and says it helps him “find an inner peace.”
