Etihad Airways has announced its biggest-ever expansion into Africa, adding six new direct routes from Abu Dhabi to destinations across West, East, and Central Africa. The routes were unveiled on 17 April 2026, with the first flights scheduled to begin from November 2026.
The six new cities are Accra (Ghana), Asmara (Eritrea), Harare (Zimbabwe), Kinshasa (DR Congo), Lubumbashi (DR Congo), and Lagos (Nigeria). None of these destinations were previously served by Etihad.
For travellers based in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the wider GCC, this opens up direct one-stop access to some of Africa’s most economically active and culturally compelling cities, without the detour through European hubs that most Africa-bound journeys currently require.

All six routes operate from Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi. According to the official Etihad press release, the routes will roll out in two phases — the first in late 2026 and the remainder in March 2027.

A few things stand out in this schedule. Lagos gets daily service from day one — a strong signal of how significant the Nigeria–UAE corridor is. The Harare–Lubumbashi route is a combined service, meaning the flight stops at both cities on the same journey. Asmara is the first to launch, a full four months ahead of the rest.
What This Means for GCC Travellers
If you’re based in the UAE — or transiting through Abu Dhabi from elsewhere in the Gulf — these routes matter for a few reasons.
Direct Access to Previously Hard-to-Reach Destinations
Asmara in particular has been a difficult city to reach from the GCC. Eritrea’s capital — a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its extraordinary Italian-colonial modernist architecture — had limited air links. Etihad’s 4x weekly service from November 2026 will be the most direct connection available from the Arabian Peninsula.
Similarly, Kinshasa and Lubumbashi are not well-served from the UAE. Business travellers working in the DRC’s mining, energy, or infrastructure sectors — and there are many from the GCC — currently have to route via Nairobi, Addis Ababa, or European hubs. GCC travellers already use Abu Dhabi and Dubai as onward hubs when travelling to Africa.
