Etihad Partner Airlines: Alternative Flights You Can Book During the Operations Suspension

Etihad is running a limited but expanding schedule from Abu Dhabi, with fresh UAE airspace restrictions in place since 4 May 2026.

Etihad’s Current Operations Status

Following the UAE airspace closure on 28 February 2026, Etihad resumed a limited schedule on 6 March and now serves around 80 destinations from Abu Dhabi. Some routes use adjusted flight paths, resulting in longer travel times.

Bahrain and Beirut services resumed on 1 May 2026, and Etihad has filed schedules to restore Kuwait and Madinah flights during May and June. Routes to Doha, Johannesburg, Sochi, and Tunis remain suspended. Recently restored destinations also include Dammam, Dusseldorf, Jaipur, Medan, Osaka, Peshawar, and Taipei.

Following Iranian strikes on the UAE on 4 May 2026, the GCAA imposed fresh airspace restrictions limiting commercial flights to narrow security corridors through at least 11 May. Etihad temporarily halted departures during the attacks and is now operating with cancellations and reroutings, so check etihad.com/flightstatus before heading to the airport.

If your Etihad flight has been cancelled, the airline’s travel waiver allows free rebooking onto Etihad-operated flights departing by 15 June 2026, or a full refund. The waiver covers tickets issued on or before 28 February 2026 with original travel dates from 28 February to 15 May 2026. From 16 May 2026, only cancelled flights remain eligible.

Etihad has built a codeshare and interline network of over 40 partner airlines spanning every continent. You can often book a single ticket through Etihad that includes segments operated by a partner carrier, with your baggage checked through to your final destination.

Here are the most useful partners to know about during the current disruption, grouped by region.

Middle East and Africa

Gulf Air resumed limited operations from Bahrain International Airport on 8 April 2026, hours after the US-Iran ceasefire took effect. The airline closed its temporary Dammam base on 30 April 2026 and is now operating solely from Bahrain, serving around 35 destinations after a major 1 May resumption phase.

Further restoration waves are scheduled for 15 May (Manchester, Rome, Guangzhou, Singapore) and 1 June (London Gatwick, Larnaca, Baku, Tbilisi, Shanghai, New York, Al-Qassim). Bahrain Airport reported delays and cancellations on 5 May following the regional airspace restrictions, so check Gulf Air’s website for the latest schedule.

Kuwait Airways has returned primary operations to Kuwait International Airport, which reopened in phases from 26 April 2026 after airspace was restored on 23 April. The airline launched Phase 2 of its restart on 3 May, expanding to 29 international destinations.

Limited Dammam services continue while the network rebuilds, including a twice-weekly Kuwait–Dammam–Istanbul rotation with overland transfers from Khairan Mall in Kuwait. Verify your flight directly with the airline before travelling, as not all carriers have announced full Kuwait resumptions.

Oman Air continues to operate from Muscat, the most stable hub in the Gulf region. The airline resumed flights to Dubai, Bahrain, and Khasab from 18 April 2026, and Amman and Dammam services resumed earlier that month.

Routes to Doha and Baghdad remain suspended, with Kuwait expected to follow now that Kuwait International Airport has reopened. Long-haul routes to London, Istanbul, Bangkok, and other destinations outside the conflict zone continue to operate normally.

Europe

For Europe-bound passengers, the Air France-KLM partnership is particularly valuable. Etihad has an expanded codeshare with both carriers, covering routes from Abu Dhabi to Paris and Amsterdam, with seamless connections across their European network.

Turkish Airlines, with its Istanbul hub, offers the widest global network of any airline and serves as an excellent alternative gateway to Europe, Africa, and Central Asia. The strategic partnership with Condor has been postponed from its planned summer 2026 launch and is now scheduled to begin with the winter 2026/27 season, with daily Frankfurt-Abu Dhabi and Berlin-Abu Dhabi services on the cards.

Asia-Pacific

Travellers heading to East and Southeast Asia have strong options. Korean Air and ANA both offer connections through their respective hubs in Seoul and Tokyo that can bridge gaps if your Etihad service to Asia-Pacific has been disrupted.

The newer partnership with STARLUX Airlines opens up additional Northeast Asian connections through Taipei. The Hong Kong Airlines codeshare also provides onward connections to four Japanese cities including Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Okinawa.

Americas

American Airlines is Etihad’s strongest partner for the Americas, offering connecting options through New York, Dallas, and Chicago to hundreds of US domestic and Latin American destinations. Air Canada provides similar coverage for Canada through Toronto.

How to Book Partner Airline Flights

There are several ways to access Etihad’s partner network, depending on your situation:

Book a codeshare flight through Etihad. When you search for flights on etihad.com, results may include codeshare flights operated by partner airlines. These appear with an Etihad (EY) flight number but are marked as “operated by” the partner carrier. The benefit is that you get a single ticket, checked-through baggage, and your booking is managed entirely through Etihad.

Book directly with the partner airline. If you need a route or timing that does not appear on Etihad’s booking system, you can book directly with the partner airline. Search for flights to Abu Dhabi or your destination on Wego to compare options across multiple airlines side by side.

Use Etihad Guest miles on partner flights. You can redeem Etihad Guest miles for flights on over 20 partner airlines. This is handled through Etihad’s website or by calling their contact centre. Availability varies by partner and route.

Contact your travel agent. If you booked through a travel agent, they may be able to reroute you through a partner airline hub as part of your existing itinerary, especially if your original Etihad flight has been cancelled under the current travel waiver.

Using Etihad Guest Miles on Partner Flights

If you have Etihad Guest miles saved up, the current disruption does not have to mean they go to waste. Etihad’s loyalty programme has partnerships with over 20 airlines for both earning and redeeming miles.

You can earn Etihad Guest miles when flying on partner airlines by entering your Etihad Guest number at the time of booking or check-in. The number of miles earned depends on the partner airline, the route, and your fare class.

For redemptions, you can use your miles to book award flights on partners like American Airlines, Air France, Korean Air, Virgin Australia, and others through the Etihad Guest portal or by phone. Award availability can be limited, especially during peak disruption periods, so book as early as possible.

Tips for Booking Alternative Flights

Check Etihad’s schedule first. Before looking at partner alternatives, confirm whether your route is operating on Etihad’s current schedule. The airline is serving around 80 destinations from Abu Dhabi, though not all run daily. Check your flight status on the Etihad flight tracker or at etihad.com/flight-status.

Consider connecting through nearby hubs. If your direct Etihad route is suspended, look at connecting through Istanbul on Turkish Airlines or Muscat on Oman Air. Istanbul Airport remains fully operational, and Muscat International Airport has maintained operations throughout the crisis. Gulf Air now operates from its Bahrain hub following the closure of its temporary Dammam base on 30 April.

Understand the waiver limits.
