The European Commission recently revealed its plans for the new ‘EU Digital Travel application’ which aims to enhance travel and security across the European Union, Wego reports.

Before the proposal, EU and non-EU citizens had to undergo manual procedural checks upon arrival. To streamline this process, the Commission introduced digital passports and ID cards as part of its digital transition. This initiative aligns with the goal of facilitating smoother and faster border crossings for travelers, reducing administrative burdens for EU citizens, and enhancing security and efficiency within the Schengen area.

The Commission will develop the EU Digital Travel application with the support of EU-LISA. This app is expected to be available by 2030 for all EU and non-EU citizens holding an EU identity card or a biometric passport when traveling to or from the Schengen area.

The benefits of the application are the following:

  • Create digital travel credentials
  • Submitting travel documents to border authorities through the app
  • Ensuring the protection of user data

This transition towards enhanced and secure digitized border processes is a further step towards the Commission’s aim of providing EU citizens with digital IDs and public digital services by 2030.
