The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 is an international association football tournament featuring the champions of each confederation’s highest-tier football club competition and the national champion of the host nation.

Since 2005, the competition has been held annually and is considered a major event by all confederations. However, it’s worth noting that the 2023 tournament was the last seven-team Club World Cup, as the 2025 edition will be the inaugural edition with updated rules and an expanded field of 32 teams. Moreover, the competition’s official name will be “Mundial de Clubes FIFA.”

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 format

As per the updated rules, the tournament will now consist of 32 football teams. Below is the confirmed Tournament format:

  • Group stage: Eight groups of four teams each, playing in a single-game round-robin format.
  • Progression: The top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16.
  • Knockout stage: A direct single-match knockout stage from the round of 16 through to the final.
  • No third-place play-off.

Below is the allocation of teams for the competition is as follows:

  • Africa (CAF): 4 teams – three via the champions pathway (CAF Champions League) and one via the ranking pathway.
  • Asia (AFC): 4 teams – three via the champions pathway (AFC Champions League) and one via the ranking pathway.
  • Europe (UEFA): 12 teams – four via the champions pathway (UEFA Champions League) and eight via the ranking pathway.
  • North and Central America, Caribbean (Concacaf): 4 teams – all via the champions pathway (Concacaf Champions Cup).
  • Oceania (OFC): 1 team – via the ranking pathway.
  • South America (CONMEBOL): 6 teams – four via the champions pathway (CONMEBOL Libertadores) and two via the ranking pathway.
  • Host country: 1 team.

As of May 2024, 27 of 32 teams have been qualified. The list of qualified teams is available on FIFA’s official website. The remaining 5 teams will be qualified as follows:

  • 2023/24 AFC Champions League winners
  • 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup winners
  • 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores winners
  • One team via the CONMEBOL ranking pathway
  • One team from the host country
