How the World Cup 2026 knockout stage works
The expanded 48-team tournament has stretched the knockout phase to five rounds and a record 32 elimination matches.
The big change is the new Round of 32 — an extra single-elimination round that never existed at previous World Cups, added because 32 teams now advance from the group phase instead of 16.
From there the bracket narrows the familiar way:
- Round of 32 — 16 matches, 32 teams
- Round of 16 — 8 matches
- Quarter-finals — 4 matches
- Semi-finals — 2 matches
- Third-place play-off and final

How teams qualify for the knockout stage
Thirty-two of the 48 teams reach the knockout bracket. They come from the 12 groups of four contested in the group stage.

Knockout stage rules: extra time and penalties
Unlike the group stage, knockout matches cannot end in a draw. If scores are level after 90 minutes, the match goes to extra time and then, if needed, penalties.
- Extra time: two 15-minute halves. There is no golden goal — both halves are played in full.
- Penalty shootout: if still level, a best-of-five shootout follows, with teams alternating kicks.
- Sudden death: if tied after five kicks each, the shootout continues one round at a time until a winner emerges.
