India Launches Online Service for Foreign Travelers to Transfer Their e-Visa or ETA to a New Passport

Last updated: Sep 23, 2026

Do you need to transfer your e-Visa or ETA?

Checked against India’s e-Visa portal and VisasNews, 23 September 2026.
What happened to your old passport?

How long is your e-Visa or ETA valid for?

You’re all set. Keep flying on your new passport, but carry your old one too, the passport your e-Visa or ETA was issued against.

India’s government confirms this is enough. No transfer needed.

Transfer it now. Since you no longer have your old passport, move your e-Visa or ETA onto the new one before you travel.

Do it on the official Transfer of eVisa/ETA on New Passport page.

This service will not cover you. Transfers only apply to the 1-year and 5-year e-Visa or ETA.

A 30-day one needs a fresh application instead.

Contact the nearest Indian embassy or consulate for how to proceed.

This checker is for foreign nationals holding a valid Indian e-Visa or ETA, not Indian citizens or OCI cardholders. The portal can now move it onto a new passport if you no longer have the old one. The transfer only covers the longer validities, not the 30-day one.

Ready to travel

Once your e-Visa or ETA matches the passport you’re carrying, compare flights to India.

Questions

Does this apply to Indian citizens or OCI cardholders too?

No. This is for foreign nationals holding a valid Indian e-Visa or ETA. Indian citizens don’t need a visa to enter India, and Overseas Citizen of India cardholders follow a separate process to update their OCI card with a new passport.

Is an e-Visa the same thing as an ETA for India?

Yes. India’s electronic travel authorization is called both an e-Visa and an ETA, and the two terms describe the same document. India redesigned it in October 2024 to show the ETA number, validity dates and permitted entries more clearly.

Which e-Visas qualify for the transfer service?

Only the one-year and five-year e-Tourist and e-Business authorizations. The 30-day e-Visa is not eligible, whatever the reason for your new passport.

Is there a fee to transfer my e-Visa or ETA?

As of 23 September 2026, India’s portal has not published a fee or a processing time for the transfer request. Submit it as early as you can before you travel.

What if I have my old passport but it’s about to expire?

If you still hold the passport your e-Visa or ETA was issued on, you don’t need the transfer service. Carry both passports through Indian immigration instead.

Do I also need India’s e-Arrival Card?

That’s a separate document. See Wego’s guide to India’s e-Arrival Card for who needs it and when to fill it in.

How this checker was built
  • India’s own e-Visa portal returned a connection failure from this build environment, consistent with it blocking non-India traffic. The transfer page’s URL is confirmed real and indexed. Eligibility and process details are sourced to VisasNews’s own review of that page rather than a live read of it.
  • The three approved transfer reasons (lost, stolen, not returned) and the one-year/five-year eligibility limit come from that same VisasNews review.
  • The “carry both passports” fallback is confirmed directly against an official Indian government source, the Consulate General of India, San Francisco.
  • No fee or processing time is published for the transfer request as of 23 September 2026, so none is stated here.
