The change follows German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s January 2026 visit to India, aimed at easing travel between the two countries.
No Airport Transit Visa Needed
Indian nationals are now exempt from Germany’s airport transit visa when passing through the international transit zone of a German airport, per the Federal Foreign Office.
It covers the five German airports with an international transit area — Berlin Brandenburg, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC). Düsseldorf and Hamburg have time or airline-arrangement limits, so check with your airline before booking.
Before the change, Indian passport holders needed an ATV just to change planes airside — even without leaving the terminal.
Who Qualifies and the Conditions
The exemption is automatic for eligible travellers — no separate application or fee. It mirrors the airport transit visa exemption France introduced for Indian nationals in April 2026.
- You must be an Indian national/passport holder
- You must remain within the airport’s international transit zone
- Your onward journey must be to a non-Schengen destination (e.g. the US, Canada, or the UK)
- Your itinerary must not require transit through two or more Schengen airports or travel on an open ticket
- You must not enter Germany or the wider Schengen area
If you need to leave the transit zone or enter Germany, you still need a standard Schengen visa.
