What exactly is the IndiGo student discount?

IndiGo’s “Student Discount” is a fare category that gives eligible students a base-fare reduction plus flexibility and extra baggage on domestic sectors. It’s available only when you book on IndiGo’s own website or app.

If you’re flying to/from the GCC, this specific discount won’t apply because it’s domestic-only. Use Wego to compare regular fares or other promos for those legs.

Eligibility & documents

Who qualifies

Must be 12 years or older.

Proof you need

A valid school/university ID card must be presented at airport check-in. If you fail to show it, IndiGo will treat the booking as cancelled, and the benefits will not apply.

Name & transfer rules

Tickets under this scheme are non-transferable; name changes aren’t allowed. The passenger’s name must match the ID.

Benefits you actually get

  • Up to 10% off the base fare on eligible domestic bookings.
  • Extra 10 kg baggage on top of the standard allowance, but the total must be in one piece (25 kg max).
  • Zero change fee: IndiGo waives the change/modification fee; you pay only if the new fare is higher.
  • Round trips and one-ways are both covered.

Inventory is limited, so the fare may not always appear on every flight/date combo.

How to book the IndiGo student fare

  • Go to IndiGo’s official website or open the IndiGo app.
  • Search for your domestic route/date as usual.
  • On the passenger/fare selection screen, choose “Student” under Special Fares.
  • Complete payment.
  • Carry your original student ID and present it at check-in to retain the benefits.

Heads-up: If you instead book through a travel agent or third-party site, IndiGo says a non-refundable service fee will apply to these student tickets.

Important conditions & gotchas

  • ID or bust: No valid ID at check-in = no benefits, booking treated as cancelled.
  • One piece only: Even though you get 25 kg, it’s restricted to 1 checked piece.
  • No stacking promos: You can’t combine this with other IndiGo offers or promo codes.
  • Limited seats: Not every flight will show the student fare.
  • No name change: Spelling errors or swaps aren’t allowed; double-check before paying.

Please note that IndiGo reserves the right to change its terms at any time, including the right to modify/cancel the scheme.

What to do if the student fare isn’t available

When you don’t see the student fare (sold out, route/date mismatch) or you’re adding international legs, use Wego to:

  • Compare regular fares across airlines in one view.
  • Spot cheaper timings or alternate flights quickly.

Keep it practical: search first on Wego for an overview of prices, then jump to IndiGo’s site/app to lock the student fare if it’s available.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

1. Can I use the IndiGo student discount on international flights?

No. The scheme applies only to IndiGo’s domestic flights within India. This means routes to or from international destinations, including GCC cities like Dubai, Muscat, or Doha, are not eligible. If you’re flying internationally, it’s best to compare fares across multiple airlines using tools like Wego.

2. What happens if I forget or can’t show my student ID at the airport?

If you fail to produce a valid student ID at check-in, IndiGo will treat your booking as cancelled under the student scheme. You will not receive the extra baggage or fare discount, and may need to rebook your ticket at the current fare. Always carry your original student ID (not a photocopy or expired card).

3. Is the discount valid on both one-way and round-trip bookings?

Yes, the student discount can be applied to both one-way and round-trip domestic bookings. Just ensure the “Student” fare option is selected at the time of booking on IndiGo’s website or app.

4. Can I change or cancel my booking without a fee?

IndiGo waives the change fee for student fare bookings; you’ll only pay the fare difference if applicable, following IndiGo’s standard terms and conditions.

5. Can I combine the student discount with other IndiGo promotions or coupon codes?

No. IndiGo clearly states that the student fare cannot be clubbed with other offers, promotional fares, or discount codes. It must be selected as a standalone fare type.

6. What should I do if the IndiGo student fare isn’t showing for my flight?

If the student fare doesn’t appear due to date restrictions, seat limitations, or if you’re flying internationally, you can use Wego to explore alternative flight options. Wego lets you compare regular fares across airlines, check nearby airports, or scan flexible travel dates using the Fare Calendar feature to find more affordable alternatives.
