An absence of news is not evidence that the airport is open. Reporting from Hormozgan province has been thin all year, and Iranian aviation websites are intermittently unreachable.
What the 1 September Strikes Hit
US Central Command said its forces struck Iranian military targets in southern Iran on 1 September 2026, naming air defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capability and communications infrastructure. Explosions were reported at several southern coastal locations including Bandar Abbas. Damage to radar and communications infrastructure bears directly on whether civil flights can operate, which is part of why the airport’s status is hard to establish from outside Iran.
Iranian Airspace: What the Rules Actually Say
Bandar Abbas sits inside Iran’s Tehran flight information region (OIIX). Iran has not closed that airspace, but it is off limits to much of the world’s aviation because of their own regulators.
- The European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s Conflict Zone Information Bulletin CZIB-2026-04-R1 tells EASA operators not to fly in the Tehran FIR at any altitude. It was extended on 31 August 2026 and now runs to 30 September 2026.
- A separate bulletin, CZIB-2026-07R2, bars EASA operators from the Gulf of Oman waters west of 58 degrees east at all altitudes. Bandar Abbas sits on that coastline. It also runs to 30 September 2026.
- The US Federal Aviation Administration prohibits US operators from the Tehran FIR under Special Federal Aviation Regulation 117, and the industry risk database Safe Airspace rates Iran at its highest level, “Do Not Fly”.
What to Do If You Have a Bandar Abbas Booking
- Contact the operating airline, not the travel agent. Only the carrier can tell you whether your flight exists on your date. Ask for confirmation in writing, and if they cannot confirm it, ask what your fare rules allow.
- Consider Shiraz, Tehran or Mashhad instead. All three are operating on the current schedule with far more service than Bandar Abbas.

- It is a single-terminal regional airport, about 12 km east of the city and a 20 to 30 minute drive. It is a joint civil and military airfield.
