Is It Safe to Travel to Egypt?

Last updated: Sep 10, 2026

As of 10 September 2026, Egypt’s main airports and established tourist centres remain open, and no Egypt-wide airspace closure has been announced. Regional conflict remains unpredictable, however, and government advisories warn that air travel can be disrupted at short notice.

Egypt has not been untouched by the regional escalation: the UK FCDO reports that an apparent drone strike and fire damaged two ships moored off Damietta on 29 July. Travellers should avoid restricted areas, follow local instructions and check every flight and transit point close to departure.

Government Advisories: Egypt’s Main Ratings Remain in Place

Current US, UK, Canadian and Australian advisories have not announced a new nationwide prohibition on travel to Egypt, but they continue to apply much higher warning levels to specified regions.

  • United States: The U.S. State Department rates Egypt Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” and says not to travel to the Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula, the Western Desert unless with a professionally licensed tour company, and Egyptian border areas.
  • United Kingdom: The UK FCDO advises against all travel to North Sinai and within 20km of the Libya border except El Salloum, and against all but essential travel to additional parts of South Sinai, eastern Ismailiyah, the Western Desert and southern border areas.
  • Canada: The Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution overall because of regional tensions, the unpredictable security situation and terrorism. It says to avoid all travel to northern Sinai, the Libya border area and specified parts of the Western Desert.
  • Australia: Smartraveller advises a high degree of caution overall and applies higher levels to specified parts of Sinai, border areas and the Western Desert.

Regional Conflict: Egypt Is Operating, but Risks Have Reached Its Coast

The regional conflict has produced strikes and retaliation across the Middle East, including renewed attacks around the Persian Gulf and Saudi-Yemen theatre in early September. The reported 29 July incident off Damietta means earlier claims that Egypt had not been targeted or affected are no longer supportable.

No source reviewed for this update reports a nationwide Egyptian airport or airspace closure resulting from the 9 September escalation. Connections through Jordan, Israel, the Gulf or other conflict-affected airspace remain more exposed to diversions and cancellations.

Cairo and Egypt Airports

Cairo International Airport continues to publish arrival and departure schedules. Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation continues to list Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor, Aswan and other commercial airports without announcing a nationwide closure.

On 9 September, some flights to and from Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh were delayed or cancelled because of a technical failure in the UK’s air-traffic system, with temporary passenger congestion reported at both airports. That disruption was not attributed to the regional conflict.

Airline Operations

EgyptAir publishes live flight status for yesterday, today and tomorrow. Its older special waiver for Middle East cancellations covered specified February-to-June travel windows and should not be treated as the current policy for a September flight.

Check the operating airline, the departure airport and the Wego Live Flight Tracker. A published timetable or advertised fare shows planned service, not confirmation that every flight will operate.

Tourist Corridors: Check the Exact Location, Not Only the Country Rating

Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are not covered by the broadest “do not travel” zones in the advisories reviewed. That does not make any trip risk-free, and travellers should follow the advisory issued for their nationality.

Cairo and the Pyramids

Cairo and Giza remain mainstream tourism areas, but official advisories warn that terrorism, scams, pickpocketing and harassment can affect tourist sites, transport hubs and crowded places. Stay alert at major attractions and search for hotels in Cairo on Wego.

Luxor and Aswan

Luxor and Aswan remain outside several Western Desert exclusion zones, but conditions and permitted routes vary. Book hotels in Luxor or hotels in Aswan through Wego and use established operators for desert excursions.

Red Sea Resorts

Hurghada and the southern coastal area of Sharm El Sheikh remain under lower warning levels than North Sinai in several advisories. Overland travel toward Taba, northern South Sinai or Israel requires a separate check because border and regional conditions can change quickly.

Areas to Avoid

  • North Sinai: The US, UK, Canada and Australia apply their highest or near-highest warning levels because of terrorism and military operations.
  • Western Desert and Libya border: Advisories warn against travel to extensive areas, with limited exceptions for specified roads, oases or licensed tours.
  • Other border areas: Military zones and higher warning levels apply near parts of the Sudan and Libya borders and in the Hala’ib Triangle and Bir Tawil area.
  • Parts of South Sinai and eastern Ismailiyah: Higher warning levels apply outside specified coastal and road exceptions.

Taba Border: Carry Cash and Check Before Crossing

The UK FCDO entry guidance recommends carrying at least USD 170 cash per person because charges have increased at short notice. Confirm that the crossing is operating before travel.

Taba travel plan Current UK guidance
Staying in Taba only USD 20 border tax for an entry permission stamp of up to 15 days
Travelling farther within Sinai USD 120 border tax for an entry permission stamp of up to 15 days
Travelling beyond Sinai USD 120 border tax, USD 30 visa and a letter of guarantee costing around USD 20

ATMs at the crossing are unreliable and payments are generally required in cash. Travellers taking a car may also face a USD 100 charge plus parking fees.

Terrorism and Crime: Main Risk Is Localised but Real

Government advisories continue to cite terrorism as a threat throughout Egypt, with the highest risk concentrated in North Sinai. Possible targets can include tourist locations, religious sites, transport hubs, government buildings and crowded venues.

Visitors should also guard against pickpocketing, scams, overcharging and harassment. Use reputable transport, secure valuables and avoid demonstrations.

Practical Steps: Confirm Flights, Avoid Restricted Areas and Insure the Trip

Check Your Flight Status

Check the airline app, airport alerts and the Wego Flight Tracker before leaving for the airport. Monitor every transit airport separately.

Visa Requirements

Visa rules depend on nationality. Eligible travellers can apply through Egypt’s e-visa portal; approved airports also sell a physical visa on arrival for USD 30 cash.

From 1 August 2026, Cairo International Airport also offers a digital visa on arrival for USD 36 by card through self-service machines or the official Visa on Arrival portal. British passport holders flying to Sharm El Sheikh for resort stays under 15 days may qualify for a free entry permission stamp, subject to the current conditions.

Get Travel Insurance

The UK FCDO warns that insurance can be invalidated by travel against official advice. Check medical evacuation, cancellation, delay, missed-connection and conflict exclusions before buying.

Stay Connected

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Egypt safe to travel to right now?

There is no single answer for the whole country. Main tourist centres remain open, while official advisories apply much higher warnings to North Sinai, border areas and parts of the Western Desert and South Sinai.

Is Egyptian airspace open?

No nationwide closure is reported in the official sources reviewed on 10 September 2026. Cairo Airport is publishing schedules, but individual flights can still be delayed, diverted or cancelled.

Has the regional conflict affected Egypt?

Yes. The UK FCDO reports an apparent drone strike and fire that damaged two ships off Damietta on 29 July, and regional tensions can disrupt flights and borders without notice.

Are Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh airports operating?

Both airports are operating. Some flights were affected on 9 September by a UK air-traffic-system failure, causing temporary congestion, so confirm the individual flight.

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

It depends on nationality and itinerary. Eligible travellers can use the e-visa portal or an approved visa-on-arrival process; Cairo’s digital visa on arrival costs USD 36, including the service fee.
