Moscow’s airports have closed twice this month during Ukrainian drone attacks, most recently on 20 September when over 400 flights were delayed. Restrictions typically lift within hours once the attack passes.
Wego lists hotels across Moscow, including options close to each airport.
What you’re owed if it’s delayed
| Wait | You’re owed |
|---|---|
| Past 2 hours | Water, within the hour |
| Past 4 hours | A hot meal, within two hours |
| Overnight, or past the airline’s own limit | A hotel room |

Does your airline avoid Russian airspace?
British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Finnair, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and Qantas, among others, have been banned since early 2022.
Finnair says its Japan and South Korea flights now run two to four hours longer. Its India, Thailand and Singapore routes are about one to two hours longer too.
Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways still transit Russian airspace on some Asia routes, and flydubai flies daily to Moscow.
That is part of why Gulf hubs picked up Europe-Asia connections that used to fly direct, though 2026 has brought occasional restrictions.
Turkish Airlines and Air India also still fly through, since neither Turkey nor India joined the ban.
Air China, China Southern, China Eastern and Hainan are among the largest users of Russian transit airspace.
They still run dozens of daily flights between China and Europe straight through it.
Aeroflot, Pobeda, S7 and other Russian carriers are banned from EU, UK, US, Canadian, Japanese, South Korean and Australian airspace in return.
That reciprocal ban is a large part of why Moscow’s international network looks the way it does today.
Gulf carriers avoided the worst of it. Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways and flydubai never lost access to Russian skies. Most Western airlines have been flying around them for over four years.

Questions
Is it safe to fly to Moscow right now?
Flights are operating, but expect the occasional overnight closure. Two have hit Moscow’s airports this month, each clearing within hours once the drone attack passed.
Which Moscow airport gets delayed most?
All four, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky, restrict flights during an attack. Sheremetyevo is the busiest and Aeroflot’s main hub, so its delays affect the most passengers.
Do I get cash compensation for a delayed Moscow flight?
No. Russia’s aviation rules require water, meals, a hotel and phone calls at set delay thresholds, but not a cash payout. EU261-style compensation does not apply here.
Which airlines still fly to Moscow?
Emirates and flydubai fly nonstop from Dubai, and Aeroflot still connects Moscow to many cities. Most Western airlines dropped the route entirely after 2022.
How do I check my own flight’s status?
Check your airline’s app first, then your departure or arrival airport’s own live board, linked above. Airport boards update faster than most news coverage.
Which airlines still fly over Russia?
Gulf, Turkish, Indian, Chinese and Russian carriers still use Russian airspace. Airlines from the EU, UK, US, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Australia have been banned since early 2022. The picker above lists the major names, not every airline in the world: if yours isn’t there, its home country’s stance on Russia decides which side it’s on.

How these figures were produced
- The status checker is a snapshot from each airport’s own FlightAware board, checked once at 09:25 MSK on 21 September 2026, not a live feed. A published page cannot refresh itself, so use the board link in each panel to check your own flight’s current status.
- A flight only counted as delayed in the snapshot if FlightAware’s own board explicitly flagged it “Delayed”. An estimated, non-ADS-B-confirmed time is not counted as a delay.
- The flight-time figures for Western carriers are Finnair’s own stated ranges, not a specific before-and-after for one route. Finnair itself says the exact route, and so the exact time, is only finalised close to departure.
- Delay entitlement figures come from Russia’s Federal Aviation Rules, Order No. 341, in force since 1 March 2026. Confirm specifics with your airline, since rules this new are still bedding in.
- Disruption counts (200+, 400+ flights) are as reported by the outlets cited, not independently verified against airport data.
