The fixed 15 June date holds even though the astronomical start of Muharram falls around Tuesday, 16 June. Placing the holiday on the Monday joins it to the weekend.
The Long Weekend
The Monday holiday creates a confirmed three-day break for most workers. Those on a Saturday-Sunday weekend are off from Saturday, 13 June through Monday, 15 June, returning to work on Tuesday, 16 June.
Sharjah government staff and students, who follow a four-day workweek with Friday, Saturday and Sunday off, get a four-day break with the added Monday. Schools, universities and early childhood centres are also off on 15 June.
