Japan Airlines: cheapest return fare by route, Tokyo departures

Fares on these routes move constantly with demand, seat availability and fuel surcharges, so treat the chart as a snapshot of one departure week. Check current fares on Wego for your own dates, and compare Haneda and Narita departures separately, since the two airports often price differently on the same day.
Hub, network and route map
JAL runs a dual-hub Tokyo operation. Haneda (HND) sits 30 to 40 minutes from central Tokyo by train or monorail and carries the bulk of the premium international flying, including all four daily London services and the Paris rotation. Narita (NRT) is around 60km east, roughly an hour by express train, and handles a large share of the leisure long-haul network plus most of the low-cost group flying.
The split matters for connections. A Tokyo transit is straightforward when both flights use the same airport, and considerably harder when an itinerary lands at Narita and departs from Haneda, since that transfer means clearing immigration, collecting bags and crossing the metropolitan area by bus or train.
Check which Tokyo airport each leg uses before booking, and allow a long buffer if the itinerary mixes them. Both airports have easy rail links into the city, with plenty of choice in hotels in Tokyo near the main stations if you need an overnight.
Beyond Tokyo, Osaka is JAL’s second focus. Itami (ITM) handles domestic flying close to the city, while Kansai (KIX) carries the international services, including the Los Angeles route moving to daily. Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo round out the domestic trunk network.
JAL belongs to the oneworld alliance, linking its network to American Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Finnair, with several of those partnerships also running as joint ventures on the transpacific and Europe markets.
The wider JAL group includes ZIPAIR for long-haul low cost, Spring Japan for short-haul low cost, J-AIR for regional jets, and Japan Transocean Air for the Okinawa island network. Searching flights to Japan will often surface all of these side by side.
Fleet and aircraft
- Boeing 787 Dreamliner: the backbone of the long-haul network, flown across the 787-8 and 787-9 variants on everything from Narita to Delhi to the mid-density North American routes.
- Airbus A350-900: introduced first on domestic trunk routes out of Haneda, replacing older Boeing 777s on the highest-volume city pairs such as Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa.
- Airbus A350-1000: the flagship long-haul type, carrying JAL’s newest Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins. It takes the daily Haneda to Paris rotation outright from 1 September 2026 and all four daily Haneda to London Heathrow flights from 1 October 2026.
- Boeing 777-300ER: still flying the heaviest long-haul routes, progressively handing them to the A350-1000 as more aircraft arrive.
- Narrowbody renewal: in March 2024 JAL announced 42 new aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, including 11 Airbus A321neos, its first ever Airbus narrowbody order, earmarked to replace the ageing Boeing 767 fleet from 2028. In March 2025 it added a further 17 Boeing 737-8s.
Baggage allowance and check-in
Japan Airlines is generous on checked baggage by international standards. On international routes, Economy and Premium Economy passengers may check two pieces free of charge, each up to 23kg.
That allowance applies across most of the international network including Europe, North America and Asia, putting JAL ahead of many carriers selling one free bag or none in their cheapest Economy fares.
Codeshare legs flown by a partner airline can follow that partner’s rules, so check the operating carrier on each segment of a mixed itinerary.
Cabin baggage is one carry-on bag plus one personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag, with a combined weight limit of 10kg. The carry-on should fit within 55 x 40 x 25cm on aircraft with 100 seats or more, total linear dimensions 115cm.
Smaller regional aircraft carry a tighter limit, so a bag that clears on a Haneda to London flight may need to go into the hold on a J-AIR connection.
Check-in opens online on jal.com and in the JAL app ahead of departure, and airport counters close by a margin that differs between domestic and international flights. Plan to be at the counter well ahead of the published cut-off on international departures, particularly at Narita during the peak morning and evening banks.
Both Haneda and Narita offer automated bag drop for passengers who have checked in online. Confirm the exact cut-off on your booking confirmation, since it varies by airport.
Loyalty programme
JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) is the airline’s frequent flyer programme. Miles are earned on JAL group flights and on oneworld and partner airlines, then redeemed for award tickets, upgrades and partner products. Annual elite status runs on FLY ON Points, which accrue on flown JAL and partner segments and determine the JMB Crystal, Sapphire, JGC Premier and Diamond tiers. Sapphire and above unlock oneworld Sapphire or Emerald benefits across the alliance.
Alongside the annual tiers, JAL runs the Life Status Programme, a lifetime scheme built on Life Status Points that accumulate across flights and lifestyle services for as long as the JMB membership stays active. Points do not expire, and six Star Grades unlock progressively better benefits.
From 12 May 2026 the crediting criteria for points earned through JAL Pay and JAL Pay currency exchange changed, and JAL Business Aviation Charter flights were added as an eligible earning service. Check the current earning table before relying on older assumptions.
How to contact Japan Airlines or manage a booking
The fastest route for most changes is the Manage Booking section on jal.com or the JAL app, where you can view an itinerary, select seats, add baggage, request special meals and in many fare types change dates for a fee or fare difference.
The app also pushes gate and delay notifications, the quickest way to learn about a schedule change. Each country JAL serves has its own reservations line listed on the website, with separate numbers for domestic and international travel.
If a flight is delayed, cancelled or diverted, JAL ground staff at the airport can rebook you and, where the rules require it, arrange care such as meals or accommodation.
Japan has no automatic cash compensation regime equivalent to the European rules, so entitlement depends on the fare conditions, the cause of the disruption and the jurisdiction the flight touches. A JAL flight departing an EU or UK airport can fall under those local passenger rights rules.

Frequently asked questions
Is Japan Airlines the same as ANA?
No. They are two separate companies and Japan’s two largest airlines. Japan Airlines flies under the code JL and belongs to the oneworld alliance. All Nippon Airways flies under the code NH and belongs to Star Alliance. They compete directly on most domestic trunk routes and much of the international network, and their loyalty programmes are entirely separate with no reciprocal earning.
Should I fly into Haneda or Narita on Japan Airlines?

Which Japan Airlines routes get the Airbus A350-1000?
The A350-1000 carries JAL’s newest long-haul cabins and is rolling out as aircraft are delivered. From 1 September 2026 it takes the daily Haneda to Paris Charles de Gaulle rotation outright, replacing the alternating pattern with the Boeing 777-300ER. From 1 October 2026 all four daily Haneda to London Heathrow flights become A350-1000 operated through 27 March 2027. Aircraft assignments can change at short notice, so confirm the type on your specific flight if you are booking for the cabin.
What is ZIPAIR and how does it relate to Japan Airlines?
ZIPAIR is the JAL group’s long-haul low-cost carrier, flying Boeing 787s out of Tokyo Narita on an unbundled fare model where baggage, meals and seat selection are paid extras. In April 2026 it announced Kuala Lumpur as its tenth destination. Spring Japan handles short-haul low cost, while J-AIR and Japan Transocean Air cover regional and Okinawa flying. All sit under the JAL group but sell and operate as separate airlines with their own baggage and service rules.
Is a four-digit JL flight number a real Japan Airlines flight?
Usually it means a codeshare. JAL’s own metal generally carries flight numbers under 1000, while four-digit JL numbers are typically sold by JAL but flown by a partner such as American Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Finnair or China Airlines. Cabin, baggage rules and service on those flights follow the operating carrier. Every fare in the chart above was checked to confirm Japan Airlines flies it.
