Do UAE residents need a tourist visa to Japan?
As per Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UAE residents holding a UAE e-passport in compliance with ICAO standards may enter Japan visa-free for a stay of no longer than 30 days.
However, travellers from the UAE looking to visit Japan for tourism purposes for a period exceeding 30 days must apply for a short-term tourist visa to Japan. The short-term visa to Japan allows travellers to stay in the country for 90 days and cannot be used to engage in activities that require income, such as operating a business or receiving remuneration.
Japan tourist visa for UAE residents requirements
In the event that you require a tourist visa for for your trip to Japan, the following are some of the general requirements to apply for a Japan short-term visa tourism visa from the UAE:
- passport with more than two blank visa pages
- copy of Passport, including the UAE residence visa page
- the filled out and completed visa application form
- one recent clear photo taken within 6 months with white background
- copy of the confirmation of flight booking
- copy of the confirmation of accomodation while staying in Japan
- schedule of stay or travel itinerary
- travel itinerary, hotel booking, flyers, leaflets etc
- documents to prove the ability to pay for travel expenses
- certificate of employment, which states the position, monthly salary, and leave period of the applicant.
- copy of bank statement (last 3 months)
- proof of current address
Please make sure to consult the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai, as additional documents that are deemed necessary for the examination may be required to be submitted.

In order to apply for a short-term visa for Japan in the UAE, applicants must acquire the specific documents listed above and submit them to either the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General of Japan in Dubai, depending on the emirate they are residing in.
The Consulate General of Japan in Dubai will process visa applications for residents in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. In contrast, the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi will process visa applications for residents in Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain.

The Japanese Embassy or Consulate General takes up to a week or more to examine visa applications after submission. However, the visa applications may be forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further examination in Japan.

The fees for the Japan short-term visa are as follows:
- single-entry visa – AED 105
- multiple-entry visa – AED 205.
The exact visa fees must be paid in cash to the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan in the UAE.
