Is Kuwait Airspace Open? Flight Status & Travel Update (September 2026)

Last updated: Sep 4, 2026

Kuwait’s airspace is open for flights landing at and taking off from Kuwait International Airport, and closed to aircraft passing overhead. Every arrival and departure needs prior approval from Kuwait’s civil aviation authority.

Here is what that means for a flight you have booked.

Is Kuwait airspace open?

Partly. The Kuwait Flight Information Region is open only for flights arriving at or departing from Kuwait International Airport, each needing prior approval from the Air Transport Department at Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Overflights, meaning aircraft crossing Kuwaiti airspace without landing, are prohibited. That restriction currently runs to 2 October 2026.

Current status: Open for arrivals and departures only, overflights prohibited

Item Status (September 2026)
Flights into and out of Kuwait Permitted with prior DGCA approval
Overflights of Kuwaiti airspace Prohibited, currently to 2 October 2026
EASA guidance to European operators Avoid Gulf waters in the Kuwait region, to 30 September 2026

What it means for your flight

If your flight starts or ends in Kuwait, it can operate, and most scheduled services are running. Expect delays and the occasional same-day cancellation rather than a closed airport. Because approvals are granted flight by flight, look up your flight number on Wego’s flight tracker the evening before and again a few hours ahead, and act on what your airline says rather than the schedule you booked from.

If your itinerary only passes over Kuwait, your airline is routing around it. That adds flying time on several Europe to Asia and Gulf to Europe itineraries, and it is why some connections are timed differently from the booking you made months ago.

Kuwait International Airport is open through Terminals 4 and 5, with Terminal 1 closed for repairs. For carrier detail see which foreign airlines are flying to Kuwait, and for the national carrier our Kuwait Airways flight status page.

Travel advisories

Advisories remain elevated, though two eased over the summer:

  • The US State Department keeps Kuwait at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, renewed 28 August 2026 with no change to the level.
  • The UK Foreign Office no longer advises against all but essential travel, a change made on 20 August 2026, but still warns of cancellations and periodic airspace closures.
  • Canada advises against non-essential travel to Kuwait.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kuwait airspace open right now?

It is open for flights arriving at and departing from Kuwait International Airport, each needing prior approval from Kuwait’s civil aviation authority. Aircraft cannot cross Kuwaiti airspace without landing, a restriction currently in force to 2 October 2026.

Can I still fly into Kuwait?

Yes. Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways are operating, and foreign carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways and IndiGo have resumed Kuwait services, most at reduced frequency.

Why is my flight to Asia or Europe taking longer?

Because Kuwait is closed to overflights, so airlines route around it. There is no direct corridor through the middle of the region at present, which adds flying time to several itineraries.
