The Olympic Handover Ceremony (26 April)

Marking the commencement of the Olympics, the Handover Ceremony initiates the countdown. The Olympic flame is transferred to a delegation from the Paris 2024 Organising Committee at the Panathenaic Stadium, before setting sail on the three-masted Bélem ship bound for Marseille, France, the next day. The Olympics kick off exactly three months post this ceremony.

Arrival of Olympic Flame (8 May)


A century-old tradition that takes people to the roots of the games. The Olympic Torch Relay will be lit by the sun’s rays on 16 April 2024 during a ceremony in the sanctuary of Olympia, Greece, where the ancient Olympics were once held. The flame will traverse the streets of France, highlighting France’s beauty, diversity, reputation, and influence during each major period of its history.

Olympic flame goes seaways (7 June)

After traversing all the lands, the Olympic flame embarks on an epic journey through six French overseas territories. Departing from Brest, the Olympic torch will traverse three out of the world’s five oceans, reaching its destinations: Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Réunion. It will finally return to Nice on 18 June.

Olympic Day (23 June)

Olympic Day celebrates the inception of the Modern Olympics and also marks a century since the inaugural Olympic torch relay at the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Olympic Winter Games in 1924. A hundred years later, the historic torch flame will illuminate Chamonix-Mont-Blanc once more, promising a rare and spectacular event.

Arrival of Olympic flame on Bastille Day (14 July)

Just 12 days before the Olympics, the true intensity and grandeur of this epic event become evident. On France’s national day, the Torch will wind its way through Paris, making its journey down the Champs-Élysées, the traditional site of the military parade. On this special occasion, the torch will take center stage, illuminating the capital with its bright flame, heralding the arrival of the Olympic Games.
