The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) does not apply to the UK, so an arrival into London or any other UK airport is unaffected. The UK sits outside both the EU and the Schengen area, and runs its own digital border schemes.

That is not the whole answer. If your journey touches mainland Europe at any point, EES applies to that leg, and at Dover, Folkestone and St Pancras it applies before you physically leave the UK.
Does the EU EES affect your trip to the UK?
No. EES is a Schengen border system and the UK is in neither the Schengen area nor the EU, so entering the country involves no EES registration.
The EES is a digital record created for non-EU travellers each time they cross an external Schengen border for a short stay.
- It captures your facial image and fingerprints on the first crossing and replaces the passport stamp
- It has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 across the 29 Schengen countries
- It is free, with nothing to apply for, because the record is created at the border
UK government guidance confirms EES does not apply to the UK, and that Ireland and Cyprus sit outside it too. Landing at Heathrow or Manchester means UK border rules and the UK’s own ETA scheme.
Where EES does reach UK travellers
Two things pull a UK trip into EES: a rail or ferry crossing to France, and any Schengen leg or connection on the same itinerary.
French border checks that happen on UK soil
French officers work at the Port of Dover, LeShuttle at Folkestone and Eurostar at London St Pancras under juxtaposed control arrangements. GOV.UK confirms that if you enter the Schengen area through one of those three, your EES checks are completed before you leave the UK.
- Biometric capture there is still switched off, with kiosks expected only after the summer peak and no firm restart date
- Dover and Eurotunnel report no fingerprint-and-photo capture this summer, and Eurostar is registering travellers without biometrics
A skipped scan does not mean you escaped registration. Your entry still enters the EES database, your passport is still checked, and your 90-days-in-180 allowance still runs.
Flying on to Europe, or connecting through a Schengen hub
Fly from the UK into a Schengen country and your EES record is created on arrival, for example on a London service to Paris or Amsterdam. It also applies if a routing puts you through passport control at Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt, even when London is your final stop.
- Passengers who stay airside and never cross the border are not registered
- Waits at the busiest hubs have run to one or two hours at peak, and several switch biometric capture off temporarily to clear the backlog
- Those switch-offs run under an EU mechanism currently set to expire on 6 September 2026, with no extension confirmed
Build that into the booking, not into a queue at 7am. Give any Schengen connection a wider transfer margin than the airline’s minimum, or pick a routing that avoids Schengen.
ETA, EES and ETIAS: three different things
Only one of the three is something you apply for to visit the UK, and that is the UK’s own ETA.
- UK ETA: needed by most visa-exempt visitors, costs £20, and covers multiple visits of up to six months each over two years or until your passport expires
- EU EES: the Schengen border record, free and with nothing to apply for, created when you cross an external Schengen border, including the French controls at Dover, Folkestone and St Pancras
- ETIAS: a future Schengen authorisation, delayed with no start date and no applications open, with a revised timetable due after eu-LISA’s board meets in September 2026
British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA, and if the UK is your only European stop, neither EES nor ETIAS touches your trip.

- Check your status: Use the GOV.UK ETA pages to confirm whether you need an ETA or a visa
- Apply early: Get your ETA through the official app or GOV.UK before you travel, as a decision is not always instant
- Match your passport: Travel on the exact passport you applied with
- Add margin on any Schengen leg: Allow extra time at St Pancras, Folkestone or Dover, and a wider buffer on Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt connections

Do I need both an ETA and an EES registration?
