Summer in Makkah and Madinah brings sustained extreme heat, so pilgrims should plan around climate normals rather than a single forecast. This guide compares June, July and August and explains how to reduce heat exposure during Umrah.

| Month | Makkah normal high / low | Madinah normal high / low | Typical conditions | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 43.8°C / 28.6°C | 38.2°C / 24.8°C | Very hot and dry | Minimise daytime exposure |
| July | 43.0°C / 29.2°C | 39.4°C / 26.4°C | Very hot with little rain | High heat risk |
| August | 42.8°C / 29.5°C | 38.7°C / 27.3°C | Very hot days and warm nights | High heat risk |
These are long-term climate normals supplied by Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Meteorology through the World Meteorological Organization. A particular day can be hotter or cooler, so check the official forecast immediately before outdoor activity.
June: Makkah is usually hottest
Makkah’s normal June high is about 43.8°C, with nights remaining close to 29°C. Madinah is cooler on the long-term normal, but daytime exposure can still be hazardous, especially for older pilgrims and people with chronic conditions.
July: sustained heat and little rain
July keeps Makkah near a normal high of 43°C. Madinah’s normal high is about 39.4°C. The lack of a cool daytime window makes shaded routes, rest breaks and air-conditioned transfers important parts of the itinerary.
August: hot days and warm nights
August remains extremely hot in both cities. Makkah’s normal low is close to 30°C, while Madinah’s is above 27°C, so even evening movement can be tiring after a long day.
How to reduce heat risk
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health advises pilgrims to limit direct sun exposure, drink fluids regularly and use light-coloured umbrellas and clothing. Its guidance also asks older people and those with chronic conditions to consult a doctor before travelling.
- Avoid peak sun: Reduce outdoor movement between 10am and 4pm, when the ministry specifically warns against direct exposure.
- Drink regularly: Do not wait until you feel thirsty. Limit drinks with added sugar or caffeine if they worsen fluid loss.
- Use shade: Carry a light-coloured umbrella and choose shaded or air-conditioned routes where possible.
- Rest early: Stop in a cool place if you develop headache, dizziness, heavy sweating, intense thirst or nausea.
- Treat heatstroke as an emergency: Confusion, collapse, seizures or loss of consciousness require urgent medical help.
Frequently asked questions
Can older pilgrims perform Umrah in summer?
Some can, but age and chronic conditions increase heat-related risk. Saudi health guidance advises older pilgrims and people with chronic conditions to consult their doctor before travel and to avoid direct sun exposure.
Is meningococcal vaccination required for Umrah?
Yes. Saudi Arabia’s 1447H (2026) Umrah rules require an ACYW-containing meningococcal vaccine at least 10 days before arrival. Conjugate vaccines are valid for five years and polysaccharide vaccines for three years.
