The month of Muharram is the first in the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year, during which no fighting is permitted. After Ramadan, it is considered the second holiest month. The Day of Ashura falls on the tenth day of Muharram.

Muharram dates and calendar in Pakistan

The 9th and 10th Muharram in Pakistan will be observed on Sunday, 7 August 2022 and Monday, 8 August 2022. However, the date of the 1st Muharram in Saudi Arabia and some other Arabic nations is the 30 July, 2022. The moon’s appearance determines Muharram’s precise date. Therefore, if the moon is seen early, Muharram can also be on the 6th of August.

Muharram 2022 moon sighting

According to the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, there’s a good chance that the sighting of the new moon may be observed on Saturday evening. The sighting of the Muharram-ul-Haram moon will signify the arrival of the new Islamic year, 1443 AH.

While dates remain tentative, the Pakistani moonsighting committee says the first day of the new Islamic lunar year, 1443 AH, 1st Muharram, will likely fall on Sunday, August 7.

Muharram 2022 public holiday in Pakistan

Pakistan has a lot of holidays lined up for the month, and while the Pakistani government has yet to declare the official holiday for the Islamic New Year, the decision will be made conditional to the moon sighting by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

How is Muharram observed in Pakistan?

The event is one of great solemnity. People pray and spend much of the day in holy locations. They also meet family and friends and exchange conversation and sweets. However, there is no pomp and show as this is a time of mourning and fasting, with many choosing to fast for multiple days around Muharram.
