Yes. Statutory leave is 5.6 weeks, 28 days on a five-day week, and bank holidays may sit inside that rather than on top. That is why every option here shows two figures.
Is Boxing Day 2026 on 26 or 28 December?
Boxing Day is 26 December, but in 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December in all three nations. The Monday is the day that counts for leave.
Do UK bank holiday dates change every year?
Some do. Easter moves. The May, spring and summer holidays are fixed to a Monday, not a date. Anything landing at a weekend is substituted. And most are not in the Act at all, so they have to be read off the published list rather than calculated.
Why does Scotland have different bank holidays?
The 1971 Act lists Scotland separately. It has no Easter Monday, adds 2 January and St Andrew’s Day, and takes its summer holiday in early August rather than late.
What bank holidays does Northern Ireland have that the rest of the UK does not?
St Patrick's Day on Wed 17 Mar 2027, and Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen's Day) on Mon 12 Jul 2027. Both are Northern Ireland only.
What is the longest break I can get for the fewest days of leave?
The festive run. 3 leave days buys 10 days off in England and Wales, and 11 days off in Scotland, where 2 January 2027 falls on a Saturday and moves to the Monday. Against a 28-day allowance that includes bank holidays, they cost 6 and 7 days.
Can I fly on Christmas Day?
Barely. Live fares for 25 December 2026 returned nothing from Belfast, and nothing to Dublin from London or Edinburgh. Long-haul from London runs normally. Two days later the same routes are open and cheaper, which is why fares here are quoted from 27 December.
