Portugal missed several tournaments in between, failing to qualify across the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s before becoming a fixture from 2002 onwards.
1966: the third-place debut that set the standard
Portugal’s first World Cup, in 1966, is still their best. The team finished third in England, powered by one of the tournament’s all-time individual performances.
The defining match was the quarter-final against North Korea. Portugal fell 3–0 behind, then won 5–3, with Eusébio scoring four of the goals.
Eusébio finished the tournament with nine goals, winning the Golden Boot as top scorer, as recorded in World Cup scoring archives.
Portugal lost the semi-final 2–1 to host and eventual champion England, then beat the Soviet Union 2–1 to secure third place.
2006: fourth place in Germany
The 2006 World Cup in Germany was Portugal’s best campaign since 1966, ending in fourth place. A golden generation led by Luís Figo and a young Cristiano Ronaldo reached the semi-finals.
Portugal beat England in a tense quarter-final, drawing 0–0 before winning 3–1 on penalties.
They then lost 1–0 to France in the semi-final, and 3–1 to Germany in the third-place play-off, finishing fourth.

Portugal at the 2026 World Cup
Portugal finished second in Group K, beat Croatia in the Round of 32, and were eliminated by Spain 1-0 in the Round of 16 on July 6.
Group K also featured DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia. Portugal’s 2026 run ended in the last 16, matching their 2010 and 2018 exits at the same stage.
