Hamad International Airport baggage rules

Qatar’s Hamad International Airport website provides important information regarding baggage rules and regulations for passengers arriving, transferring, or departing from the airport. Here’s a concise summary of the key points.

  • security check: Upon arriving at the airport, your hand baggage will undergo a security screening before proceeding to the baggage claim area. Prohibited items, such as weapons, firearms, ammunition, alcoholic beverages, pork products, and narcotic drugs, will be confiscated and cannot be retrieved
  • customs: After collecting your checked baggage, you’ll pass through Customs. There are two channels: the Green Channel for passengers with “Nothing to declare” and the Red Channel for those with “Something to declare.” Items that must be declared include alcoholic beverages, exceeding permitted limits of foreign currency, jewelry, precious stones, prohibited and restricted weapons and firearms, illicit materials, carrying more than 400 cigarettes, and personal items and gifts exceeding QAR 3,000 (USD 825) in value. If requested by a customs officer, you must disclose any currency, jewelry, or precious stones in your possession. Failure to comply may lead to confiscation and legal consequences
  • taxes and duties: Depending on the items you bring into Qatar, you might be required to pay taxes or duties
  • priority processing: Al Maha customers, special assistance travelers, and unaccompanied minors receive priority processing when departing from Hamad International Airport
  • lost and found: If you forget or misplace any items during the security check, refer to the airport’s lost and found office to receive assistance in retrieving them

Qatar baggage allowance by airlines

Kindly note that the baggage allowance is subject to variation based on the airline you select for your journey to Qatar. Below, we present a concise overview of the baggage allowance for airlines operating flights to Qatar.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is the national carrier of Qatar and one of the leading airlines in the world, offering flights to over 160 destinations across six continents. Customized to cater to travelers’ needs, the baggage allowance of this airline encompasses both the weight and piece concepts.

The weight concept permits you to check in multiple bags, provided each bag adheres to the designated weight limit for your class. On the other hand, the piece concept allows you to check in a certain number of bags, each with its own weight limit.

In most cases, the weight concept is applicable. However, when traveling to and from the Americas and Africa or for flights into Africa, the piece concept is enforced.

Nevertheless, it is essential to remember that baggage allowances can differ based on your chosen route and cabin class. Thus, verifying the precise regulations on your ticket before your departure is crucial.

  • flights to/from all destinations: 20kg (44lb) for Economy Lite, 25kg (55lb) for Economy Classic, 30kg (66lb) for Economy Convenience, and 35kg (77lb) for Economy Comfort

Checked baggage

For routes with baggage allowance based on weight (in Kg), there is no limit on the number of pieces that can be checked in as long as the total weight allowance for all pieces is not exceeded. However, certain restrictions may apply based on the aircraft carrying capacity.

  • flying to/from Africa or the Americas: Length + width + height should not exceed 158cm
  • flying to/from other destinations: Length + width + height should not exceed 300cm
  • maximum weight: A single piece of checked baggage should weigh no more than 32kg (70lb)

The maximum dimension per bag for flights departing from Dammam must not exceed 158cm. For flights departing from Dublin, items carried as checked baggage must not exceed 240cm as the maximum length per bag.

Please note that baggage with round, irregular-shaped, tied with loose rope or string, wrapped in blankets, or having loose straps will not be accepted.

Hand baggage

When traveling with Qatar Airways, you are permitted to carry hand baggage onboard the cabin in addition to your regular checked-in baggage allowance. The allowance for hand baggage varies depending on your travel class:

  • First Class and Business Class customers can carry two pieces of baggage with a combined weight not exceeding 15kg (33lb)
  • Economy Class customers can carry one piece of baggage, not exceeding 7kg (15lb)
  • For Economy Class customers on flights to or from Brazil, one piece of baggage is allowed, not exceeding 10kg (22lb)

The maximum dimensions for each piece of hand baggage are 50x37x25cm (20x15x10in). Laptops and laptop bags should fit within your hand baggage allowance

In addition to your hand baggage, you can also carry personal items such as one lady’s handbag or one small briefcase, one coat, cape, or blanket, one umbrella, one pair of crutches or a walking stick, one small camera or binoculars, limited reading material, an infant’s carrying basket, and duty-free items purchased on the day of your flight.

Regarding liquids and gels, you can carry containers up to 100ml (3.4oz) in your hand baggage. Containers larger than 100ml cannot be accepted, even if only partly filled. These containers should be carried in a transparent, resealable, quart- or liter-sized bag with dimensions no larger than 20x20cm (8x8in). Please ensure all items fit comfortably in the plastic bag.

During airport security screening, you will be asked to present your transparent bag of liquids separately. There are no restrictions on baby foods and medication; however, you may be required to present a prescription for any medication you wish to take onboard.
