Ramadan dates and calendar 2025
In Germany, the holy month of Ramadan commenced on 1 March and will conclude on 30 March 2025.
The beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the hilal, the first crescent of the new moon. This crucial observation, sometimes assisted by modern technology, leads to official announcements, signaling the start of a month dedicated to fasting, prayer, community, and unique cultural traditions worldwide.

Ramadan in Germany
Germany is home to approximately 5 million Muslims, accounting for about 6.1% of the total population. This vibrant Muslim community ensures that Ramadan is a joyous occasion in Germany, even though it is not a Muslim-majority country.

Many German Muslim communities organize gatherings for iftar (the evening meal to break the fast) and even pre-dawn meals (suhoor) together. During last year’s Ramadan, Frankfurt made history by illuminating a major street with Ramadan decorations, such as half-moons, stars, and lanterns.
Muslims in Germany observe Ramadan with great anticipation and festivity, embracing the month’s deep sense of joy and community. One of their biggest challenges is the long fasting hours, lasting 17–18 hours. This makes iftar a highly anticipated moment, bringing families and communities closer. Cities like Cologne uphold traditions such as street iftars and mosque-organized gatherings, similar to those in Frankfurt.
Mosques across Germany also host Taraweeh prayers, offering a space for spiritual reflection and connection throughout the holy month. Notable mosques where Taraweeh prayers are held include the Sehitlik Mosque in Berlin and the Berlin Mosque.
Some rules to observe
Germany’s diverse society means that while Ramadan is a significant time for Muslims, daily life continues as usual for the broader population. No specific regulations or restrictions are imposed during this period.
