Referee’s Body Camera at the 2026 World Cup: How the Ref Cam Works

Last updated: Jun 24, 2026

What is the ref cam and why is it at the 2026 World Cup?

The ref cam is a body-worn camera that broadcasts the game from the referee’s own perspective, something fans have never had at a World Cup before.

It was first trialled at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, where the pilot ran under the name “Referee View”.

FIFA Chief Refereeing Officer Pierluigi Collina said the trial “went beyond our expectations”, which paved the way for a full rollout in 2026.

The goal is straightforward, in FIFA’s words: enhancing transparency, understanding and engagement throughout the match.

How the ref cam works

The camera is built into the referee’s communications kit, not a separate gadget clipped on for show.

It forms a three-part system alongside the referee’s earpiece and microphone, keeping officials connected to the assistant referees, the fourth official and the VAR team at the same time.

The main technical hurdle was shake. A referee sprinting and turning produces footage too blurry to broadcast cleanly.

FIFA’s Official Technology Partner Lenovo built AI stabilisation software that smooths the footage in real time, reducing motion blur caused by rapid movement.

That processing happens centrally, with the system supported by servers at the International Broadcast Centre in Dallas.

The result is a sharper, more stable first-person view than the raw on-body footage shown in some domestic leagues.

When and where you will see ref cam footage

You will see the ref cam mostly in replays and special angles, not as a constant live feed.

FIFA treats the footage as a separate broadcast tool rather than part of the standard feed sent to every media partner, as explained in tournament coverage.

Expect it to surface around key moments: a goal celebration, a tight tackle, or a player confrontation seen from the referee’s eyeline.

The ref cam sits alongside the tournament’s other big officiating upgrades, including expanded VAR powers and advanced semi-automated offside technology.

Heading to a host city to see it live?

If you are travelling to a match, the ref cam will not change your view in the stadium, but the trip still needs planning.

Host cities fill up fast on match days, so lock in flights and hotels early:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ref cam used in every 2026 World Cup match?

Yes. Tournament coverage reports FIFA is deploying referee body cameras across all 104 matches, building on the trial at the 2025 Club World Cup.

Does the ref cam replace VAR?

No. The ref cam is a broadcast feature for fans, while VAR remains the system for reviewing decisions. The two are separate, though both rely on the referee’s communications kit.

Who approved the use of referee body cameras?

The IFAB, football’s lawmaking body, approved them as a competition option for referees, assistant referees and fourth officials. The competition organiser provides the cameras and controls the footage.

Where can I watch the World Cup ref cam in the Middle East?

beIN SPORTS holds exclusive MENA rights to all 104 matches on TV and its TOD and beIN CONNECT streaming platforms. Coverage is available in Arabic, English and French.
