What Is the Round of 32?
The Round of 32 is the first knockout round of the 2026 World Cup. Thirty-two teams play 16 single-elimination matches, and the winners move on to the Round of 16.
It runs from 28 June to 3 July 2026, straight after the group stage ends on 27 June.
Until now, the World Cup went from the group stage directly into the Round of 16. The Round of 32 is an extra step that simply did not exist at any previous tournament.
Why It’s New for 2026
The 2026 World Cup is the first with 48 teams instead of 32. More teams means more matches, and a different shape to the early knockout rounds.
This is where fans get confused: the old World Cup had 32 teams in total. The new one has a knockout round called the Round of 32 — a completely different thing.

How Teams Qualify
Thirty-two teams reach the Round of 32 from the 12 groups. They come from two routes:
- Group winners and runners-up: the top two from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically — that’s 24 teams.
- Best third-placed teams: the 8 best third-place finishers across all 12 groups fill the last 8 spots.
So finishing third in your group is no longer an automatic exit. For the first time, a strong third-place record can be enough to stay alive.
How the Eight Third-Placed Teams Are Ranked
All 12 third-placed teams are compared against each other. The best 8 go through, ranked in this order:
- Points earned in the group stage
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Disciplinary (fair-play) record
- Drawing of lots, if teams are still level
Because the matchups depend on which groups the qualifying third-placed teams come from, the full bracket is only confirmed once the final group match is played on 27 June.
How the Knockout Bracket Works
From the Round of 32 onward, every match is single-elimination — win or go home. The bracket flows through five rounds to the final at MetLife Stadium near New York on 19 July 2026.
