Route cuts

Confirmed network changes2026–2027
  • Spain — winter cuts confirmed; Asturias fully cut for Summer 2026: Vigo and Tenerife North were cut, Santiago’s base was closed, Valladolid and Jerez remain closed, all Asturias flights ended for Summer 2026, and capacity was also reduced at Santander and Zaragoza. In June 2026 Ryanair said it would consider returning to Vigo if Aena cuts airport fees, but no reinstatement has been confirmed.
  • Germany — winter cuts, partial Summer 2026 reinstatement and Berlin base closure: 24 routes were cut across Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt-Hahn, Dortmund, Dresden, Leipzig and Memmingen. Ryanair reinstated 14 new routes for Summer 2026, including new launches at Saarbrücken and Friedrichshafen. The seven-aircraft Berlin base is due to close from 24 October 2026, cutting Berlin’s winter schedule by 50%.
  • France — permanent cuts with a partial Summer 2026 restart: Brive and Strasbourg services remain suspended; Clermont-Ferrand operations ceased from 27 March 2026; Bergerac flights restarted for Summer 2026 following negotiations with French authorities.
  • Portugal — permanent: all six routes to and from the Azores ended from 29 March 2026, affecting around 22% of Ryanair’s Portuguese capacity.
  • Belgium — Summer 2026 restored, later cuts announced: Ryanair confirmed a full Summer 2026 Charleroi schedule across 112 routes. It later announced that it would withdraw five of its 18 Charleroi-based aircraft for winter 2026 and summer 2027.
  • Dublin — Summer 2026 capacity cut: Ryanair withdrew around 4,500 planned Summer 2026 flights from Dublin Airport. Ireland’s Dublin Airport (Passenger Capacity) Act 2026 was signed into law on 17 July, but as of August the cap itself had not been formally lifted and Ryanair had not confirmed restoring the withdrawn flights.

A network announcement is not the same as a cancelled booking. Use your booking reference to see whether Ryanair has changed your flight and which remedies it offers.

Rising aviation taxes and airport fees are driving the cuts. Major hubs like Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Porto are unaffected and operating normally.

How to Check If Your Ryanair Flight Is Cancelled

  1. Wego flight tracker — live status for every FR-coded flight.
  2. Ryanair “Manage This Booking” — shows your refund, re-route and change options if cancelled.
  3. Ryanair app — push notifications for schedule changes.
  4. Airport departures boards — real-time gate and cancellation status.

Your Options: Refund, Rebook, or Reroute

Ryanair’s policy gives three core options when the airline cancels a flight. These remedies also apply when you are told 14 days or more in advance; the 14-day threshold mainly affects cash compensation.

Option Best For What You Get (per Ryanair)
Full refund Travellers who no longer need to fly Full ticket value refunded to original payment method. Ryanair credits the refund to your Ryanair Wallet within 24 hours for direct bookings, then up to 5 working days to transfer to your card or bank.
Change flight (rebook) Travellers with flexible dates on the same route Free change to a new date/time on the same route, subject to availability.
Re-routing Travellers who must reach their destination Alternative transport at the earliest opportunity or a later date you choose, subject to seat availability.
  • Paid extras (bags, seats, priority) transfer to your new flight automatically.
  • The booking portal defaults to a Wallet voucher — say explicitly you want a cash refund.

How to Get a Refund

  1. Log in at ryanair.com and open the cancelled booking.
  2. Select refund — it lands in your Ryanair Wallet within 24 hours.
  3. Withdraw to your card: up to 5 working days. Or use the refund claim form directly for cash.
  1. Use the refund link in Ryanair’s cancellation email.
  2. Complete Ryanair’s verification if your details weren’t shared by the OTA.
  3. Keep all OTA correspondence until the refund lands.

How to Rebook or Re-route

Both are free through “Manage This Booking”. If re-routing isn’t offered online and you need it (including onto another carrier), call Ryanair and quote “EU261 re-routing under comparable transport conditions.”

Your Passenger Rights

Ryanair’s refund, rebook and reroute options (above) apply no matter what caused the cancellation. Cash compensation on top of that is separate, and depends on how much notice you got and why the flight was cancelled.

Rule Compensation When it’s not owed
EU261/2004 (EU-departing flights, and EU-carrier arrivals into the EU) €250 / €400 / €600, by flight distance 14+ days’ notice, or an “extraordinary circumstance.” Ryanair treats ATC strikes, including the Spain SAERCO walkout, as extraordinary.
UK APR 2019 (UK-departing flights) £220 / £350 / £520 Same notice and extraordinary-circumstance rules. The UK CAA handles escalated complaints.
Care and assistance (both rules) Meals, two calls or emails, hotel and transport if needed Only owed if you accept prompt re-routing. A refund or a later rebooking forfeits it.

Revised EU air passenger rights rules were formally adopted in July 2026 but are not yet in force, so the amounts above still apply. For how these bands compare with what a travel insurance policy pays out, see our guide to travel insurance and airline strikes.

Will Travel Insurance Cover This?

Sometimes, but it depends on when you bought the policy and whether the cause counts as an insured peril. Our dedicated guide, does travel insurance cover airline and airport strikes?, walks through strike cancellations, permanent route cuts and credit card protection in detail.

Tips for Affected Travellers

  1. Document everything. Screenshot the cancellation, keep your booking reference, save emails, and photograph departure boards if you’re stranded.
  2. Escalate to the regulator if refused. UK to the Civil Aviation Authority, Ireland to the Commission for Aviation Regulation, EU to your national enforcement body.
  3. Credit card Section 75 is a backstop for UK purchases over £100 if Ryanair doesn’t refund in time.
  4. On an Italian strike day, use the app, not the queue. It’s usually faster than the service desk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a cash refund if Ryanair cancels my flight?

Yes. Ryanair’s policy says you are entitled to a full refund to your original payment method when Ryanair cancels. Use the dedicated refund claim form at refundclaims.ryanair.com, or withdraw from your Ryanair Wallet after the refund lands there within 24 hours.

How long does Ryanair take to process a refund?

24 hours to Wallet, up to 5 working days to your card. Ryanair states that direct-booking refunds land in the Ryanair Wallet within 24 hours and transfer to the original payment method within 5 working days. Separately, EU261 requires airlines to reimburse a valid cancellation claim within 7 days. OTA bookings can take longer, as the airline has to verify your details with the agent first.

Am I owed EU261 compensation on top of my refund?

Maybe. You may be owed €250–€600 in cash compensation if Ryanair cancelled the flight less than 14 days in advance, the replacement timing does not remove the entitlement, and the cause is not classed as extraordinary. ATC strikes — including the Spain SAERCO walkout — are treated as extraordinary by Ryanair. Permanent route cuts announced months ahead are not eligible either. Strikes by Ryanair’s own staff are normally not extraordinary under current EU case law. Revised EU rules were formally adopted in July 2026 but are not yet applicable, so the amounts above still apply for now.

Will Ryanair pay for my hotel if I’m stranded overnight?

Only if you accept prompt re-routing. If you choose a refund or rebook for a later date of your choice, Ryanair’s policy says you forfeit the care-and-assistance entitlements. Keep all receipts either way and claim through travel insurance as a backup.

Ryanair cut my route permanently. What are my rights?

Refund, rerouting or a free same-route change. If the cut was announced more than 14 days before travel, EU261 cash compensation is generally not payable, but Ryanair still says you can choose a refund, request rerouting under comparable transport conditions, or change to a new date/time on the same route for free.

Is my booking safer on ryanair.com or through an OTA?

Direct bookings usually have the simpler refund path. Ryanair’s stated timeline is 24 hours to Wallet and up to 5 working days to the original payment method after withdrawal. An OTA booking may require Ryanair’s customer verification process or may send you back to the partnered OTA through the cancellation-email refund link.

Can I rebook onto a non-Ryanair flight if nothing else is available?

Potentially, under EU261. Ryanair must offer re-routing “under comparable transport conditions” — this can include another airline if no Ryanair seat is available at your earliest opportunity. Ryanair will not volunteer this option through the online portal; you need to call customer service and ask for it explicitly.
