Is Saudi Arabia Airspace Open? Flight Status & Travel Update (September 2026)

Last updated: Sep 21, 2026

Saudi airspace remains open overall, and Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah are operating commercial services. On 19 September, Saudi authorities said a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh was intercepted; RUH had major delays and several cancellations that day, but disruption eased substantially by 20 September.

A fire occurred at a fuel depot near King Khalid International Airport, but public evidence does not establish that airport terminals or runways were directly struck or that the fire was caused by the intercepted missile. There has been no blanket nationwide airspace closure or closure of the four main hubs.

Is Saudi Airspace Open?

Yes. Saudi airspace is open. Airline routing and individual schedules can still change at short notice because of the regional security environment.

Airspace Open overall. Airline routing and individual schedules can still change at short notice.
Main airports Riyadh (RUH), Jeddah (JED), Dammam (DMM) and Madinah (MED) are operating commercial services.
Southern airports Abha (AHB), Jazan (GIZ) and Najran (EAM): repeated alerts and short-notice flight disruption; confirm the operating flight before travel.
Saudi airlines Saudia, flynas and flyadeal continue to operate; confirm the specific route and flight.
Advisory US: Level 3, Reconsider Travel. UK: no blanket advice against travel, but avoid the Yemen border area.

Two European safety notices apply, and they say different things:

  • EASA’s Information Note for the Jeddah FIR, issued 31 August 2026 and valid to 30 September, asks airlines to factor the remaining risk into their routing decisions. It does not tell them to stay out.
  • A separate bulletin, CZIB-2026-07R2, tells operators to stay off the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman west of 58 degrees East, except when landing or taking off. That reshapes flights through neighbouring Gulf hubs rather than flights over Saudi Arabia.
  • Iran, Iraq and Lebanon remain no-fly at all altitudes, and Kuwait is closed to overflights until 2 October. Both push more traffic through Saudi corridors, which is why delays show up even when nothing is wrong at your airport.

Saudi Airport Status

The four main passenger airports are operating commercial services. At the southern regional airports, the current risk is individual cancellation or temporary local disruption during security alerts.

Airport Status Check flights
Riyadh, King Khalid International (RUH) Operating. Major disruption was reported on 19 September; operations subsequently moved back toward normal. Check the individual flight. Wego RUH tracking
Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International (JED) Operating. Commercial services available; recent wider alerts have also caused delays. Official JED status
Dammam, King Fahd International (DMM) Operating. Commercial services available; check the individual flight. Official DMM site
Madinah, Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz (MED) Operating. Commercial services available; check the individual flight. Official MED status
Abha (AHB), Jizan (GIZ), Najran (EAM) Confirm directly. Repeated security alerts and short-notice flight disruption affect these airports. Confirm with your airline before travelling.

Published schedules or bookable fares for those three routes are not proof that a specific flight will operate after the latest attacks.

Which Airlines Are Flying to Saudi Arabia?

Saudi carriers and major regional airlines continue to operate services through the main hubs, but operating status depends on the exact route and flight.

  • Saudia (SV) is operating its domestic and international network from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
  • flynas (XY) publishes domestic and regional services; confirm the exact flight before travelling.
  • flyadeal (F3) is running its low-cost domestic and regional programme.
  • KLM states that its Riyadh and Dammam flights are suspended through 24 October 2026 inclusive.

International carriers have different operating decisions; confirm the operating airline rather than relying on a general timetable. Our companion guide sets out which foreign airlines fly to Saudi Arabia now and which are still suspended, airline by airline.

Compare flights to Riyadh and flights to Jeddah on Wego by total duration, not just price. The cheapest itinerary is often the one routed through a hub that is adding time.

If Your Flight Is Cancelled or Delayed

Work through the operating airline first. Its app is usually faster than an airport desk.

  • Under GACA rules, the airline must offer available alternative flights and explain applicable care, support and compensation.
  • If you reject the alternative and end the contract, GACA rules provide for a refund of the full ticket value, including additional booking fees such as paid seats and baggage. Force-majeure and safety exceptions can affect compensation.
  • If you booked through an online travel agency, contact both the agency and operating airline, keep the cancellation notice, and obtain a complaint reference number.
  • Avoid tight connections through Gulf hubs while overflight restrictions add time to regional sectors.
  • Keep medication, chargers and documents in hand luggage in case of a long delay or a diversion.

Travel Advisories for Saudi Arabia

  • The US State Department keeps Saudi Arabia at Level 3, Reconsider Travel.
  • The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to Saudi Arabia generally, but advises against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border and against all but essential travel between 10 km and 80 km of it.
  • Canada advises avoiding all travel within 30 km of the Yemen border and a high degree of caution elsewhere.
  • If an alert is issued while you are in the country, follow instructions from Saudi authorities and official channels rather than social media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Saudi airspace open?

Yes. Saudi airspace is open and is one of the main southern bypass corridors while Iran, Iraq and Lebanon are avoided. EASA asks airlines to account for the remaining risk in their routing, which is caution rather than avoidance.

Which Saudi airports are closed?

There is no blanket nationwide airport closure. Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah are operating commercial services; Abha, Jazan and Najran face repeated alerts and can have temporary local disruption or individual cancellations.

Are flights to Saudi Arabia back to normal?

Commercial services are operating at the main hubs. Riyadh operations moved back toward normal after the 19 September disruption, but conditions are not normal for every route. Southern services can be disrupted at short notice, and KLM has suspended Riyadh and Dammam flights through 24 October 2026 inclusive.

Can I still book a flight to Abha, Jizan or Najran?

Seats may still be on sale, but confirm the specific flight directly with the airline after the latest attacks. A confirmed booking is not proof that the flight will operate.
