What is a Schengen visa?

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any members of the Schengen Area, per stays up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes. Should Pakistanis apply for Schengen Visa?

It depends. If you are a Pakistani citizen, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa in order to enter the Schengen area.

If you are a Pakistani resident, depending on where you have citizenship, you may have to apply for a Schengen visa in order to enter the Schengen area. Pakistani residents with citizenship in the following countries are required to apply for a Schengen Visa:

How to apply for Schengen Visa in Pakistan?

Documents and requirements for Pakistani residents

The following documents are required when applying for a short-term Schengen visa in Pakistan:

  • Visa application form: Download the form and fill it completely and honestly. You can also fill the Schengen Visa application form electronically and then print a hard copy.
  • Two photos: Two recently taken passport size photos with a light background. Check for the visa photo requirements for Pakistani citizens before you take your photos.
  • Valid Pakistan passport: The passport must be no older than 10 years and have a validity of at least 3 months after your planned date of leaving Europe. It must also have two blank pages.
  • Pakistan Residence Permit: Proof of residence in Pakistan might be necessary, so we recommend that you carry photocopies of either a national ID card or a residence permit.
  • Flight itinerary reservation: Provide proof of itinerary from Pakistan to Europe and back including dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from the specified state/states.
  • Proof of accommodation: A document that shows where you will be accommodated throughout your stay in Schengen. This could be a hotel booking, a rent agreement, or a letter of invitation by a host at whose house you will be staying.
  • Proof of sufficient funds: There are several ways to provide proof of sufficient financial means such as a bank statement indicating your financial movements for at least 3 last months, a credit card, traveller’s cheques, supporting document to prove a sponsor’s readiness to cover your expenses, documentation for private accommodation, etc. Check for eligible ways for proving sufficient financial means.
  • Travel insurance: Any travellers can book travel insurance online through the Europ Assistance website or via any travel insurance company in Pakistan that meets the following requirements: Medical coverage of at least Euro 30,000. Medical evacuation/repatriation must be covered.

Documents required if the traveller is a minor (under 18):

  • Letter of consent from both parents/legal guardian.
  • Passport copies of both parents/legal guardian.
  • Copy of birth certificate: If a minor is adopted, then proof of adoption is required. If parents are divorced, then proof of divorce is needed. If one or both parents are deceased, then proof of death is needed.

Specific required documents, based on the visa applicant’s employment status are as following:

For employees:

  • Employment contract.
  • Current bank statement of the latest 6 months.
  • Leave permission from the employer.
  • Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary.

For the self-employed:

  • A copy of your business license.
  • Company bank statement of the latest 6 months.
  • Income Tax Return (ITR).

For students:

For retirees:

  • Pension statement of the latest 6 months.

If unemployed and married to an EU citizen:

  • Confirmation of Employment letter, no older than three months, from their spouse’s employer stating the position held within the company as well as the starting date.
  • Spouse’s valid passport.
  • An official marriage certificate.

Steps to apply for Schengen Visa in Pakistan

In order to apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan you must follow these steps:

  1. Check which Schengen visa type you need. There are different Schengen visa types depending on your purpose of travelling from Pakistan to Europe.
  2. Check where you need to apply for a Schengen visa in Pakistan. Pay attention to the embassy/consulate/VAC of where you need to apply.
  3. Decide when to apply for a Schengen visa in Pakistan. Applicants seeking a Schengen visa from Pakistan should apply no earlier than 6 months before their intended date of travel, and no later than 15 working days before their departure.
  4. Collect the required Schengen visa documents for Pakistani citizens.
  5. Appoint an interview at the visa application centre in Pakistan. Depending on the country, you may make an appointment online, by phone, or in person. Below in this article, you can find more information for each EU embassy/consulate located in Pakistan.
  6. Attend the interview on the day of your appointment.
  7. Pay the visa fee. All Schengen states have fixed and synchronized visa fees.
  8. Wait for the processing of your visa.

After the interview, you will have to wait for at most 15-30 days, for a response on your application. In rare cases, it might take up to 60 days.

  • Adults: 80 Euros (around PKR 15800)
  • Child between 6-12 years of age: 60 Euros (around PKR 11850)
  • Child younger than 6 years of age: FREE
  • Holders of diplomatic and service passports: FREE
