South Africa Long Weekends 2026 and 2027: Every Public Holiday and Where to Go

Four, and they are the same wherever in South Africa you work: Thu 24 September 2026, Heritage Day, Wed 16 December 2026, Day of Reconciliation, Fri 25 December 2026, Christmas Day and Sat 26 December 2026, Day of Goodwill. Election day on 4 November is expected to be a fifth, but it has not been proclaimed yet.

Yes, and South African law is unusually direct about it. Section 5(1) of the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 says every employee is entitled to at least the public holidays in the Act and to be paid for every one of them. There is no split between the public and private sectors and no list of covered industries. The Act’s own long title is “to provide that the public holidays be paid holidays”.

No. There is one national list of twelve days in Schedule 1 of the Act, and it is identical in all nine provinces. The only way a day can be added is section 2A, which lets the President declare one by proclamation in the Government Gazette. A province has no power to declare a public holiday at all, which is why the planner above changes your fares and not your calendar.

This is the thing most people get wrong, and it cuts only one way. Section 2(1) says that when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday. It says nothing whatsoever about Saturday. So a holiday that lands on a Saturday is simply lost: no substitute Monday, no day in lieu, nothing. That happens three times between now and the end of 2027: Day of Goodwill on Sat 26 December 2026, Workers' Day on Sat 1 May 2027 and Christmas Day on Sat 25 December 2027. December 2027 shows both halves of the rule in one weekend, with Christmas Day falling on the Saturday and vanishing while Day of Goodwill falls on the Sunday and earns you the Monday.

Not yet, whatever you may have read. The President announced 4 November as the date for the local government elections on 30 April 2026, and election day is normally declared a public holiday under section 2A. That declaration is a separate proclamation in the Government Gazette, and as of 28 August 2026 the government’s own public holidays page does not list 4 November. Treat it as likely but not certain, and do not spend leave around it until it is gazetted.

Human Rights Day falls on Sunday 21 March 2027, so the Monday becomes a public holiday. Good Friday is the 26th and Family Day the 29th. Book the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in between and the whole block runs 20 to 29 March 2027, which is 10 consecutive days for three leave days. Without that Sunday rule pushing Human Rights Day onto the Monday it would cost you four.

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday and New Year’s Day is the Friday after. Book the Monday to Thursday in between and you get 10 days off for four leave days, 25 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Day of Goodwill falls on Saturday 26 December that year, so it buys you nothing at all.

Working on one is by agreement, and section 2(2) of the Act adds something many people do not know: a public holiday is exchangeable for another day if you and your employer agree to it. So your own contract or a collective agreement can legitimately shift a date this page prints. The entitlement is firm; the specific day is not always. Check your contract before you book flights around a date.

Johannesburg, and not narrowly. Seven foreign airports have a direct flight from O.R. Tambo inside ninety minutes: Gaborone at about 45 minutes, Eswatini 50, Maseru 60, Maputo 70, Bulawayo 75, Harare 90 and Maun 90. In fact 13 foreign airports are closer to Johannesburg than Cape Town is. From Cape Town nothing foreign is inside ninety minutes at all, and the nearest is Gaborone at about two hours. From Gqeberha there is no international service whatsoever: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban are the only direct flights, and everything else connects.

No, and this surprises people. There is no published direct service to Mumbai or Delhi from any South African city, Johannesburg included, even though KwaZulu-Natal has the largest population of Indian descent anywhere outside India. Every route runs through a hub, usually in the Gulf. The planner prices those connections from Durban on the longer windows so you can see what one actually costs rather than guess.

It depends heavily on which city you fly from, which is worth knowing before December. Of Harare, Bulawayo, Maputo, Maseru, Lilongwe, Lusaka and Victoria Falls, Johannesburg has a direct flight to 7 of the seven and Gqeberha has none of them. The planner prices the festive window from all four cities so you can see both the fare and whether it is a direct flight.

Usually because of how far away it is, not because the window is better value. Every fare here was read on one day, 28 August 2026. Heritage Day was about four weeks out at that point and Youth Day was nine months out, and a short-haul fare four weeks from departure is close to its peak. Cape Town from Johannesburg, for instance, is ZAR 3,679 return over Heritage Day and ZAR 2,807 over Youth Day. Treat every number here as a snapshot of one morning, and expect the 2027 figures to rise as those dates approach rather than the 2026 ones to fall.

Usually because it is an unbundled fare, where the headline price buys the seat and nothing else. Lift and Safair are the cheapest option on 36 of the 91 priced routes here. On those fares a checked bag, a larger carry-on, seat selection and any change are charged separately, and the real total can land above a fare that looked dearer.
