SpiceJet Fuel Surcharge 2026: What It Means for Your Travel Costs

Last updated: Apr 7, 2026

SpiceJet has introduced fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights effective March 14, 2026, joining Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air in passing on rising jet fuel costs to passengers. The budget carrier’s chairman Ajay Singh called crude oil prices above $90 per barrel “unsustainable” for Indian aviation.

The surcharges come as global ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) prices surged nearly 100% in a single month due to supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict near the Strait of Hormuz. Here’s what SpiceJet passengers need to know about the added costs and how to manage them.

Why SpiceJet Is Charging a Fuel Surcharge

The immediate trigger is the West Asia conflict, which has disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz and sent global jet fuel prices soaring. According to IATA’s Jet Fuel Monitor, the average price of jet fuel surged over 100% month-on-month for the week ending March 27, 2026, rising from around USD 99.40 per barrel at the end of February to USD 195.19.

Aviation turbine fuel accounts for nearly 40% of an airline’s operating costs. For a budget carrier like SpiceJet, which operates on thin margins, the spike left little room to absorb the increase without passing some of it to passengers.

SpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh told Bloomberg on March 10 that Indian airlines would have “no choice” but to impose fuel surcharges if the situation worsened. Within days, SpiceJet followed Air India and IndiGo in rolling out the charges.

How Much Extra You’ll Pay

SpiceJet has not published a detailed public breakdown of its fuel surcharge rates the way IndiGo and Air India have. The surcharge is applied per passenger, per sector, and appears in the fare breakdown at the time of booking.

Check the fare breakdown carefully when booking on SpiceJet’s website to see the exact surcharge for your route. The amount will appear as a separate line item alongside the base fare and taxes.

What Other Indian Airlines Are Charging

To give you a sense of scale, here’s what SpiceJet’s competitors are charging. SpiceJet’s surcharges are expected to be in a similar range, given its position as a low-cost carrier competing directly with IndiGo and Akasa Air.

Route Type IndiGo (from Apr 2) Air India (from Mar 12) Akasa Air (from Mar 17)
Domestic (up to 500 km) ₹275 ₹299 ₹199
Domestic (500–1,000 km) ₹400 ₹499 ₹399
Domestic (1,000–2,000 km) ₹600–₹800 ₹599–₹699 ₹599–₹799
Domestic (above 2,000 km) ₹950 ₹899 ₹999
Middle East (e.g. Dubai) ₹3,000–₹5,000 ₹3,100 ₹1,300
Southeast Asia (e.g. Bangkok) ₹3,500–₹5,000 ₹4,650 N/A

Note: SpiceJet’s surcharge structure has not been publicly detailed. The above rates from competitors serve as a reference point. Always check SpiceJet’s booking page for the exact surcharge on your route.

Who’s Affected and Who Gets a Pass

You’ll Pay the Surcharge If:

  • You book a new ticket on or after March 14, 2026, on any SpiceJet domestic or international flight
  • You change your itinerary on an existing booking, which may trigger the surcharge on the rebooking

You Won’t Pay the Surcharge If:

  • You booked before March 14, 2026 and don’t make changes to your itinerary. Existing bookings are unaffected

What About SpiceClub Loyalty Points?

SpiceClub points can be used toward the total ticket price, including taxes and surcharges. However, unlike some full-service airline loyalty programs that waive fuel surcharges on award redemptions, SpiceClub does not exempt fuel surcharges from point bookings. The surcharge will be part of the total amount when you redeem points.

The Government’s 25% ATF Price Cap

In a move that brought some relief, the Indian government intervened on April 1, 2026, capping domestic ATF price hikes at 25% per month. Without this cap, domestic jet fuel prices would have jumped over 100% in a single month.

Under the directive from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Ministry of Petroleum, state-run oil marketing companies can only pass a staggered 25% increase (roughly ₹15 per litre) to domestic airlines. This is why domestic surcharges remain in the hundreds of rupees rather than thousands.

The catch: this cap applies only to domestic routes. International flights face the full impact of global fuel price increases, which is why surcharges on routes to Dubai, Bangkok, and Kathmandu are significantly higher.

SpiceJet’s chairman Ajay Singh publicly thanked the government for the intervention, saying it helped save Indian aviation from “a fuel price that would have ended some airlines.”

How to Manage the Extra Cost

Book Sooner Rather Than Later

Fuel surcharges are revised every few weeks based on ATF pricing. If the West Asia situation escalates further, surcharges could increase. Booking now locks in the current surcharge rate for your trip.

Compare Across Airlines on Wego

Different airlines apply different surcharge structures. A route where SpiceJet adds ₹400 might cost ₹275 on IndiGo or ₹199 on Akasa Air. Use Wego to compare the total ticket price (base fare + surcharge + taxes) across all carriers before booking.

Watch for Surcharge Revisions

Airlines typically revise fuel surcharges every 3-4 weeks. If ATF prices stabilise or the government extends its price cap, surcharges may come down. Follow SpiceJet’s flight updates on Wego to stay informed.

Know Your Cancellation Rights

Under the DGCA‘s revised rules effective March 26, 2026, you can cancel or reschedule within 48 hours of booking without additional charges (for flights more than 7 days away domestically or 15 days internationally). Cancellation charges are also capped at the base fare plus fuel surcharge.

Consider SpiceJet’s International Routes Carefully

SpiceJet currently operates international flights to Dubai, Bangkok, Phuket, Kathmandu, and Najaf. Since international routes don’t benefit from the government’s ATF price cap, the surcharge on these routes will be notably higher. Compare with competitors flying the same routes to find the best total price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the fuel surcharge apply to tickets already booked before March 14?

No. If you booked your SpiceJet flight before March 14, 2026, and don’t make changes to your itinerary, the fuel surcharge will not apply to your existing ticket.

Why hasn’t SpiceJet published its exact surcharge rates?

SpiceJet has not released a public rate card like IndiGo or Air India. The surcharge amount appears in the fare breakdown when you search for a specific flight on SpiceJet’s website. It varies by route distance and destination.

Can I use SpiceClub points to cover the fuel surcharge?

Yes. SpiceClub points can be used toward the full ticket price, including taxes and the fuel surcharge. However, the surcharge is not waived for loyalty redemptions.

Will the surcharge go away once fuel prices drop?

Fuel surcharges are typically revised every 3-4 weeks based on current ATF prices. If global jet fuel prices stabilise or fall, airlines are expected to reduce or remove the surcharge. However, there is no fixed end date.

Is the surcharge refundable if I cancel my flight?

Under DGCA’s revised rules (effective March 26, 2026), cancellation charges cannot exceed the base fare plus fuel surcharge. If you cancel within 48 hours of booking (for flights departing more than 7 days out domestically), you should receive a full refund including the surcharge.
